Columbus Day

Is Columbus Day on the 14th October this year, if so is it a public holiday in Harrisburg/Hershey? what will be closed? We are only visiting for a couple of days as part of a longer holiday, we're from the UK and aren't sure about your National holidays. Thanks

Just seen an earlier post where Kipona festival was mentioned...what's that?

Kipona means festival of "sparkling waters." It is a festival held in the Riverfront Park and City Island areas of Harrisburg over the Labor Day weekend (this year that would be August 30 - September 2). There are food vendors, a chili cook-off, a Native American village, boat races, an art show, etc. For more information check out this link to an article in our local newspaper.

As for the Columbus Day weekend, most federal, state & local government offices and schools are closed on Columbus Day. Typically, this effects things like the PA State Museum and PA Capitol tours; however, I just checked the State Museum website and can't figure out if they are open or closed that day. Otherwise, privately owned businesses are open. Everything in Hershey, that is open at that time of year, will be open for business.

2. Re: Columbus Day

Most tourist attractions (such as Hershey) are actually BUSIER Columbus Day weekend, since school kids, teachers, government workers, have a three day holiday weekend.

As Fly Eagle says the main issue for you is whether the Starte of Pa owned attractions in Harrisburg, such as the Museum and Capitol building will be open Monday, Columbus Day. If they are not you should do them another day.
