Top Oregon destinations in July for a family?

Hello!

We are planning a month long road trip for summer 2017 in July. We live in Southern California and will spend time in Utah, grand Tetons national park, Yellowstone, glacier national park, Visiting friends in Seattle and will be heading home through Oregon. My husband and I have only been to Portland and cannon beach and loved both. Any tips on spots to visit in Oregon? We are thinking about staying near depoe bay and doing some coastal things and tillamook cheese factory, and then maybe staying somewhere near crater lake or sun river? We have 3 kids, who will be 10,8 and 4 at the time of the trip. Just starting Oregon research and would love any tips. I don't think we want to camp in Oregon as we are doing lots of camping other places but might if it's something not to be missed. Thanks!

Have you done the Columbia River Gorge? If not, its great and close to Portland.

Year round waterfalls, dams, fish hatcheries (very good one) and more

If you go out as far as the Dalles, the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center Museum is very good.

For the Oregon Coast I would start at Astoria - Cannon Beach area,

The Maritime Museum in Astoria is superb.

Ecola State Park is superb

There is also Lewis and Clark Historical Park area (fort, etc.)

Just a couple of thoughts as there are hundreds of great things to do in Oregon.

Crater lake is amazing. If you have the chance and time----- not to be missed. Not sure if it's too late to get a reservation in the crater lake lodge but it's an amazing place to stay especially if you have a lake view room. Def worth it!!

There is a boat cruise you can take around the lake. You hike down a pretty steep trail to get to the launch but it's great. One of my favorite national parks and I've been to most of them!!

Have a wonderful trip!

If you stay near Depoe Bay, go on a whale watching trip. We did one with Dockside Charters last Fall. It was just a short trip but we saw whales and it was fairly inexpensive. You should take the kids to the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport also.

The Tillamook Cheese Factory is fun, it will be very crowded in July so you may want to plan on getting there when it first opens. Nearby is Cape Lookout State Park which is also a beautiful place to explore.

Have you been to Seaside? Kids love it here (so do we) and there are many fun activities if your family likes to stay busy. www.seasideor.com Enjoy your travels! :)

I'm sorry, but with a year to go and an entire huge state to consider you really should look over online and official tourist guides of places to see and things to do in Oregon (including the listings and reviews right here on Tripadvisor).

Go over everything with your family and see what excites them the most. Volcanoes, huge sand dunes, whales, waterfalls, tide pools, fossil hunting, Oregon Trail and Lewis and Clark, river rafting....the list is endless and we know nothing about you.

All you'll get by fishing for ideas here will be random suggestions from a comparatively few people. Such as Tillamook Cheese Factory...which doesn't offer a live tour, sells products available in markets everywhere, makes grilled cheese sandwiches that don't compare with ones you make at home and isn't even on the coast. In a state filled with natural wonders, exciting activities and unique and historic locations, we tout a place to get an ice cream cone as prime tourist destination??? C'mon, Prince Puckler's here in Eugene is better and the BJs parlors in multiple locations are just as good. In fact, everywhere you'll be going has a great locally owned ice cream parlor.

Decide with your family what you really want to see and do, decide how many hours a day you'll be comfortable driving, what total number of days you are willing to budget for Oregon and then come back to us with your draft itinerary for review.

Then you will be more likely to get useful feedback from our experienced destination experts.

I hope you will take Oregonpoppa's post to heart. We get so many posts like yours on the Oregon and Washington forums, and they are actually more harmful than helpful as a way to plan a trip. Oregon is stunningly beautiful and stunningly diverse. It's like a microcosm of the entire nation with everything from mountains to beaches to Wild West type landscapes to volcanoes. There are fascinating historical parks and caves and rivers and hot springs - really, there's everything. It would be a shame to plan a trip based on random suggestions from strangers, only to find out later that you had missed something your family would have adored.

Get a few guidebooks from the library and do some research online. Make sure you cover Western Oregon, Central Oregon, and Eastern Oregon, as they all have much to offer. Then get back to TripAdvisor with preliminary itinerary for feedback. The DEs here really know their stuff, and the best way to take advantage of their expertise is to do some of your own work first and ask them to help you make choices and fill in details.
