Two Days in Portland- help please!

I will be visiting Portland mid May. I have a daughter who lives in Forks Washington and normally I fly into Seattle and drive over to see her but this trip I am flying into Portland. I have always wanted to go to Portland! I was planning on bringing my 19 year old son and he cancelled on me today! So now I’m on my own and am re thinking my itinerary!

I would love some advice!

My trip so far is- Fly in late to Portland, stay one night by the airport. Wake up early and head to The Waffle Window (is there one by the airport?)

Next, I’m leaving for Forks. After 3 1/2 days in Forks Im headed down the Coast to Portland.

I will have 2 nights and two full days in Portland.

Some things I want to see are- the food trucks at 10th and Alder, The Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden, Hawthorne neighborhood and The Pearl neighborhood, I am planning on eating at Pok Pok and The Little Pigeon and food trucks.

On Tuesday after lunch I am headed to The Columbia Gorge. And then head to the airport for my late night flight.

So my main question is where should I stay that would make it easy to walk or take public transportation to where I want to go? I don’t mind walking! I have traveled on my own a lot but I want a safe nice hotel. Any suggestions and ideas would be great!

I recommend checking out www.travelportland.com for hotel deals. They often have package deals with free parking and/or free breakfast. The Nines would be a great place to stay. Very beautiful rooms and Departure Lounge towards the top of the hotel has a stellar outdoor patio with great views! Right on the MAX line, kitty corner to Pioneer Square, walking distance to just about anywhere as Portland is small.

Sounds like you have a good plan lined up! I don't think there is a Waffle Window anywhere near the airport.

I LOVE Pok Pok but not a huge fan of Le Pigeon. There is a great new restaurant on Hawthorne called Township & Range. Very reasonably priced with huge portions. It has only been open for 2 months and I have already been there twice.

Township & Range looks great. The Nines is a little expensive, I'm going to check out travel Portland and see if I can find something a little less expensive.

The Nines is an incredible place to stay! The Heathman, Benson and Hotel Deluxe are some other favorites of ours. Enjoy Portland! :)

Do check out TravelPortland.com - and feel free to post back once you have a list of places that meet your budget. Generally, Portland is a very "safe" city, even downtown - so it's more about location close to light rail and shopping/dining/etc. Pretty much anything in downtown with a 'SW' street address will fit the bill...

Re: The Waffle Window. There are only 2 locations. Choose the one at 2624 NE Alberta for closer to the airport (12-15 minute drive from the terminal). http://wafflewindow.com/?page_id=12 & http://goo.gl/maps/FCXde

Other places to recommend:

Blue Star Donuts http://www.bluestardonuts.com/ - skip the Voodoo Doughnut hype and go here instead. SW Washington & 13th (downtown)

Toro Bravo - http://www.torobravopdx.com/ excellent tapas-style dining. If you're by yourself, grab a seat at the counter in front of the kitchen and watch the chefs work. Also, try to sneak upstairs and have a quiet cocktail or glass of wine at Secret Society http://secretsociety.net/ 116/120 NE Russell St (inner NE - 5 min from downtown)

When you mentioned wanting a nice hotel, The Nines came to mind. You didn't say anything about your price range. Another good option is to bid on priceline for a 4 star hotel in downtown. You really can't go wrong with any of them although some are better than others.

Portland does have a lot of homeless / vagrants / panhandlers whatever you call them. (Many are not "homeless"). Most are fine but it's possible you may bump into a more aggressive one. Just be prepared to be firm.
