College Road Trip - Seattle, Pullman, Portland, Eugene, PDX

We are two families of 4 adults and 3 teens flying into Seattle March 30 and out of Portland April 6. We have college tours scheduled in Seattle on Monday morning, April 1, Pullman Tuesday morning, April 2, Eugene on Thursday, April 4, and Portland on Friday, April 5. We are planning on driving from Seattle to Pullman on Monday and staying overnight, then heading toward Portland after our WA State U tour on Tuesday. We have lodging reserved in Portland Wednesday night so that leaves Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday to meander down the Columbia River Gorge on our way to Portland and stay somewhere for the night. We'd like to keep our hotel cost under $130 for each room, or find a place that can accommodate all 7 of us in a cabin/lodge. And we'd like to cram as much scenery in as possible. As for food, we get most excited about local, farm to table type restaurants. Suggestions on lodging, dining, routes, sight seeing for any part of this trip would be greatly appreciated, but especially need information on Columbia Gorge.

As mentioned, many colleges have arrangements with hotels for special rates. In Pullman we did not find that, but did use a military rate. In Spokane, the Davenport even has special Gonzaga rates and they are much more than just $10 off. Usually it is a very good deal. We have done about 14 college visits in the last couple of years with our kids, so I remember these trips well, lol:)

Yow, Seattle to Pullman is a haul! Here's hoping there's no late season snow in the passes ... but do be prepared for something like that just in case.

P.S. it's snowing like crazy at Government Camp (elevation 3900 feet) right now ... shown on the local news.

I would love to hear about your experience. We are planning a college trip right now. We are flying into Portland, driving to Eugene and then will leave from Seattle. Haven't determined if we will drive from Eugene to Seattle yet or catch a commuter. Also interested in colleges to visit while we are there that are in that route. don't want to stray too far off the trail. Thanks!!

Coloradobeachgoer--I can help you a lot with college visits, being through it with our own kids as well as being a college advisor for a while. That said, you will get more information if you start your own thread. Otherwise people may see the date and then bypass it, plus the replies will be unique to your trip:) BTW, the drive from Eugene to Seattle is easy, so don't worry about that. The biggest piece of advice for now is to plan your visits for when classes are in session. Your student will get SO much more out of the visit! Plus many times the colleges invite you to sit in on a class, which is huge. I still remember sitting in a chemistry class at Creighton with one of our kids and it left a lasting impression(in a good way, lol).

I couldn't have said it better than Mtngrl. We are now in the throes of choosing which college to go to as the acceptances roll in (Yay!!). We had a great trip last year - but unfortunately didn't take the advice above about visiting classes. We enjoyed discovering more about each city outside of the college, too.

Welcome to TripAdviosr, Coloradobeachgoer. It would be great if you could start your own thread, since as MrsO said, this one is a year old. Also, then all the posters can give you information specific to your own Oregon visit!
