Both have character- Cannon Beach is classic artsy beach town and Astoria is enjoying a newly 'funky' fishing town vibe. The biggest difference is Cannon Beach is on the beach and Astoria is on the river.

Both are charming. Cannon Beach more artsy, Astoria more historic. Both will be chilly, but maybe sunny or full of wind and rain. One never knows. I personally prefer Cannon Beach because one never knows...great places to be inside as well as outside and then there is that incredible ocean! Have fun, whichever you choose.

Thanks for both responses! Weather sounds problematic, so maybe not the breezy ocean front----though that can be fun, too! Any suggestions on good places to stay?

Yesterday was sunny and beautiful here in Seaside! We played golf and spent some time on the beach. What is your budget for lodging? :)

Happy news about the sun! Our budget would be moderate ie $$$. Seaside would be fine, too, if you have something to suggest there.

If you are regular to the coast, Astoria might be better because more to do. Maritme Museum, Lewis and Clark sites. And if chilly beach may not be much fun.

But if you rarely get to beach pick Cannon Beach. It is right on the beach we stayed at the Tolovana Inn a few weeks ago with short walk to beach, and we had ocean views. We went to beach even though it was chilly. And wife walked a couple of miles on beach. Seaside can be a bit cheaper.

>> Happy news about the sun <<

Syrahgirl visits the Oregon coast a couple of times a year but she missed this past December - we had over 19 inches of rain just in that one month! (Plus 13" in October and 14" in November, ugh)

Today on the coast (I live here) is cloudy, slightly drizzly and very cool.

Astoria = about 10,000 population, lots of history, Victorian homes, hills, river

Cannon Beach = about 1,200 pop, lovely beach, very artsy upscale, scenic

Seaside = about 6,500 pop, flat, congested, busy
