My plans have changed...now flying in

I'll be flying into PDX and then taking bolt bus or amtrak to Seattle....not taking bus into PDX.

I would like some suggestions of hotels easy to get to (I will not have a car) from the airport that are in budget to fairly nice category. Also, it would be nice to be near lots of touristy things to do. Is that the downtown area?

Can anyone give suggestion on good city tours?

Tks in advance. I appreciate any help.

There is a MAX light rail line from the airport to downtown. For a couple bucks it will take you right to the hub of our shopping/hotels/etc - Pioneer Courthouse Square. Within a few blocks there are all the major chains- Hilton, Westin, Marriott, Marriott Courtyard plus some boutique-y ones- Hotel Monaco, Hotel Vintage Plaza, Hotel Lucia, the Nines... Depending on what time of year you are coming these will all probably be within $50 of each other (maybe the Nines a little more).

We do have a new "Pink Line" hop on hop off bus but I haven't tried it... Any thoughts from those who have? Assuming it's not raining, I would lean towards a bike tour of the city- check out Pedal Bike Tours. My family from New England rented bikes from these guys while they were out here and it worked great. Walking distance from the Courtyard too!

Tks so much! I'll start surfing the 'net for hotels. I'll be arriving 11/17 and leaving prolly around 11/21 to go to Seattle using either Bolt Bus or Amtrak train. Hopefully public transportation is also good to either of these.

I'm kinda out of shape so not sure a bike tour would be good for me. Would very much like more ideas for tours...even maybe a day trip tour out of Portland.

I've done a little surfing and found the Saturday Market which I think is also open on Sunday? Sounds like something I would like to visit also.

Tks again.

Staying in downtown Portland will be much nicer than the airport area. The Nines viis a fantastic hotel with first-class service. You may want to check the POVA website for good deals on downtown Portland hotels. They offer free parking and complimentary breakfast on this website, also.

Enjoy your time in Portland! :)

Here are some day tours out of Portland:

You might also be interested in a river tour - either the Willamette or the Columbia; either fast or leisurely! Here are some ideas for those:

We've stayed in the airport area many times and the hotels there are perfectly fine, and yes you can take MAX train into downtown. However, it is not at all the same as staying "in" the city with all the city stuff close together, even within walking distance for much of it.

I would definitely opt for a hotel right in downtown instead of out at PDX. There are hotels for all budgets downtown.

This website has some walking tours listed. http://www.portlandwalkingtours.com/tours/

The epicurean tour is one that a few friends have done and rave about it. I have also heard good things about the underground tour. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them though.

In mid November, it will be pretty chilly rainy (most likely) and being on the river is not what most people would find pleasant.

Yes, the Saturday Market is open on both Saturdays and Sundays. It is a wonderful place, IMO and you can easily spend hours there.

Try the Inn at Northrup Station. It's close to budget and in a perfect neighborhood for easy access to great good and public transport.

Tks so much to everyone for all the info!! I'll be having fun surfin' the 'net and planning my trip. I have already booked my flights.

I do know about the weather during November. I've been visiting my son in Seattle (Kirkland) for the past few years. Ya just have to deal with it. :) One year there was a snowstorm that closed the whole city. I was stuck at his house by myself for a day and a half while he was stuck downtown. Last year it rained every day but my last day and I was out in it one whole day walking around Seattle and then taking a city tour.

Last year I bought a nice winter coat that I can wear 3 ways since it has a removable liner. I'm ready!! :)

Mucho tks again! If you have any more ideas, just let me know.

Hello again, I've been surfing and checking out some of the stuff posted for me here.

Can someone give me instructions on how I would get to Inn at Northrup Station hotel from the airport using public transportation? It looks like it's so far away! How long would it take?

This hotel looks so cool!! But I'll have a very large suitcase with me and it looks so far away..

Is this hotel in a good location...near lots of things etc.

I will also have to get to either the Amtrak train station or the Bolt Bus stop on SW Salmon. Will either one of those be hard to get to from this hotel?

I appreciate the help.

Do you have wheels on your suitcase? That would make it so much easier. Downtown is not hard to navigate,

Yes my suitcase does have wheels.

Can someone help with instructions for the max train from the airport to Inn at Northrup Station at 2025 NW Northrup?

I would greatly appreciate it.
