downtown hotels - walk to Powells

Planning a three night stay in September. We're from Seattle and know Portland fairly well - just don't often get to spend very long exploring. We'd like to be able to walk to Powells and maybe Park Avenue to see stained glass. (My hubby is a Povey descendant and does stained glass himself.) Would like a somewhat historic hotel, and bright rooms or at least larger windows. Prefer rooms with a bit of charm. Considering the Paramount, Governor Hotel, Westin, Hotel Vintage Park. Any suggestions between these and other choices? Thank you for any tips!

when did it become 'not free'? we were told to hold onto our tickets and no one asked about them for the 3 days that we were there. i asked a nice woman who lives here, and she said that the just don't collect them. there is no one on the street car to do it?

In my experience on the MAX trains, nobody *ever* asks to see tickets - and we've ridden them a lot. We always wonder what percentage of people never bother to pay for tickets. I don't see how TriMet will enforce the "not free anymore" policy unless they hire a bunch of new workers to check tickets all the time.

Anyway, as of Sept 1, 2012 riders have to pay for all public transportation in the city of Portland.

we didn't do it on purpose...we just didn't know who to give the ticket to ...that was FREE, by staying at the inn at northrup.

The light rail is on the honor system. You are expected to be holding tickets valid for your trip. Enforcement is random via fare inspectors.
