For our upcoming drive/motel/camp trip I've studied maps, done some online research, but know from past experience this forum is one of the best sources for trip planning. We will be driving up US 97 from Calif and plan to see Newberry Volcanic and spend a night in the Bend area. The next 2 nights are in the Portland/Columbia River area, and we're looking for advice on how to best spend our time. We're going to drive along the Columbia from The Dalles to Portland, and are interested in taking a riverboat cruise on the Columbia, and spending perhaps a full day exploring the area. Another full day will be in Portland, and might include a trip on the jetboats on the Willamette. We enjoy the outdoors, including gardens, scenic drives/scenery and historical buildings and homes. The dams and locks on the river also interest us. Shopping is a secondary interest, tho of the local, specialized variety, and not outlet malls etc. I see there are some distilleries with tours/tasting that intrigue me.
After Portland, we're continuing along the Columbia to Astoria and down the coast, primarily camping, spending 2 nights camping in the Calif redwoods and then back home to near San Francisco. We have previously visited the Oregon coast up to almost Florence, camping. Otherwise, except for the southern portion of US 97, this will be new territory for us. If anyone has anything specific to offer, and/or links to past postings, it would be greatly appreciated.
