Has anyone saw whales lately?

We are going to be staying the 30 & 31 at a vacation rental. Has anyone saw any whales? Any suggestions on things to do and see?

This is whale migrating season, so, yes, people have seen them. Chuck.

Depoe Bay has year round resident whAles, often seen close in from the highway and whale watching center.

We'll be staying a couple nights at the Coast (Gleneden Beach) in about a week. Expect to see some whales and will report if we do.

As oregonpoppa says, Depoe Bay and other towns along the coast have resident whales that stay here year round. And yes, we also see migrating whales. Saw a couple yesterday from the road going through Yachats :-)

You have picked a great time to be here on the coast, as the weather is really *super* right now! Usually this time of year we have rain, wind, maybe snow, freezing temps at night, and more rain . . . but this year it's lovely weather, sunny and fairly warm :-)

So you'll be able to be outside comfortably. Lots of hiking nearby - Cascade Head, Devil's Punchbowl and more. Plus, of course, the beach!

We just got home from 3 days of sun, blue skies and whale watching at the coast. It was great, and the intensive whale watching will continue for at least another week or so.

Be sure to check out the web site for Whale Watching Spoken Here:

www.oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm…

There's a map on that site about all the locations along the coast where volunteers are stationed to help you see the whales. Usually, the higher up you are on a bluff, the better the view and opportunity to see spouts.

I drove the coast from Florence to Manzanita and back yesterday a from the looks of the surf, I suspect whale watching was a bit tough. It is much harder to spot whales in heavy surf.

We were at the beach on Saturday [Newport to Depoe Bay] and didn't see any whales. Granted, much of that time we were walking on the beach concentrating on other things but we did stop at a few high vantage points and struck out. It was sure a pleasant day.

Pay attention to other folks -- pointing, peering intently through binoculars; cars pulled to the side of the road. People are pretty eager to share whale sightings with others. Higher vantage points help. If you have access to binoculars, bring them along.

Good luck!
