Staying in McMinnville?

Thanks to those who have given us great advice about the Oregon Coast. Now we are planning our way back north towards Washington from Ashland and are looking for 3 nights in the general area of Portland. One day to explore The Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood and the other to relax and wander around and take in some of the beauty and history of the area.

We came across the Mattey House B&B which looks very nice but we were just a little worried that it might too long a day trip from there to The Gorge and that the area itself might be a little too much like The Napa.

If it helps our next overnight will be on The Olympic Peninsula, possibly Port Townsend.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, Adam. So glad to hear Silverton works for you. I can’t believe you’ve already found lodging, and with an ex-pat to boot! You won't be disappointed with Silverton. These are some various stopping opportunities:

From Talent, your itinerary would take you to K Falls (1.25 hrs/87 mi); then

4.25 hrs/215 mi = ~High Desert Museum~ You can get a reasonably good meal there and it's a nice place to spend 45 additional minutes (worth a great deal more time, but you get a nice feel for the historic West in a brief visit). It’s right on Hwy 97.

4.5 hrs/225 mi = ~Bend~ good place to gas up (best prices)

5 hrs/247 mi = ~Sisters~ an attractive little Western-themed town geared for tourists. It has lots of interesting shops and several very nice restaurants, cafes and coffee shops. It would make a nice break for a meal and walkabout. There are 2 places I prefer; I can get names later, don’t recall off hand.

5.75 hrs/320 mi = pick up the North Santiam River, a beautiful river (my own...), State Scenic Drive

6 hrs/336 mi = ~Detroit~ Korner Post Cafe -- very good American diner cooking in a tiny community right on Hwy 22.

Stop at the Detroit Ranger Station, a beautiful log visitor center with interesting free displays, a pleasant leg-stretcher. On the hwy.

Watch the left (lake side) as you round Detroit Lake for a stunning view of Mount Jefferson. There’s a pull-off on the lake side of the road so you can take a picture.

7 hrs/336 mi = ~Gates~ (my teeny-tiny home town, before Salem). Sierra Restaurant -- excellent Mexican food. On the hwy.

7.25 hrs/341 mi = ~Mill City~ Poppa Al's for the best hamburgers in 5 counties, and Rosie's Mtn. Coffee House for excellent homemade soups, lattes and the scones that we get every year for the British travel group Christmas party.

7.75 hrs/376 mi = ~Sublimity~ turn off Hwy 22 here to go to Silverton

8.25 hrs/389 mi = ~Silverton~

If you start at 0800 you should get to Silverton about dusk (1700), allowing an hour’s stopping along the way.

Adam, yes, that's a long day. (I would do it, but not everyone appreciates a road trip the way I do.) An interesting fact is that it’s actually 10 miles shorter to go north, up the west side of Klamath Lake (instead of going to K Falls), and continuing on Hwy 62 to Crater Lake and doing the western rim drive of the lake, cutting east on Hwy 138 to catch Hwy 97. This is a State Scenic Drive and Crater Lake is a National Park. Maybe others out there have driven that?

Hello?

I haven’t.

britfan--I have always wondered about that Poppa Al's. It is always busy, so we figured it had to be good. In Sisters our favorite dive is the Ski Inn. We have been going there for about 35 years or so and it is always a must stop, lol!
