Affordable oceanfront in Oct?

Looking at spending 5 nights in Oct. as seems like a good base for exploring Oregon coast. Solo senior looking for clean, quiet, affordable place ($100/night or less) with oceanfront setting. Wondered about Elizabeth St. Inn?

Finding lodging on the coast for under $100 will be a challenge. Especially if you want oceanfront VIEW (not just oceanfront SETTING). Elizabeth St. Inn doesn't show any rates below $100 in October. Also, that hotel isn't in Lincoln City: it's in Newport, which would be a nicer base of operations for exploring the coast.

You might also find Yachats very agreeable.

Beautiful setting, rates in your ballpark in October, and only a 1/2 hour south of Newport and north of Florence. Right next to Cape Perpetua.

Thank you. It looks nice. I"m also checking an older post I did for recommendations in Newport as trip didn"t work out but think this Oct. one will.

Someone suggested Waves of Newport - wonder if you know it? Rates for 5 nights (likely Sun. to Thurs. for lower weekday rate).. Another suggestion was Whaler Newport which seems to have oceanfront balconies and would be less than 100 a night. Any thoughts on either of these welcomed.

I will have a look at Newport Hotels on TA as had been looking at Lincoln City.

Other question has to do with how long a drive it would be from Portland as looking at flying in and out of there and picking up rental car there.

October rates tend to be somewhat lower, but without even looking it up I was pretty sure that the Elizabeth Street Inn would not be under $100 ;-)

Some *oceanfront* places to check out - located in Newport - would be:

Shiloh Inn ~ $90 (next door to Elizabeth Street Inn)

Little Creek Cove condos ~ $90 (stay 7nights, pay for 6)

Moolack Shores ~ $75-$100

The Whaler ~ $90-$110 (across quiet street from beach)

The Waves ~ $75-$90 (across gravel road from beach)

These places differ a lot - some are older, some are more luxurious, some have better beach access, all offer micro & fridge and are oceanfront unless noted. All probably offer a senior discount.

Thanks - will have a look at these. Interested in one that is not across road ie right on ocean.

Leaving rate aside for a bit would you recommend the Elizabeth Street Inn? I notice Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) uses it for one of their programs.

We have personally stayed at Elizabeth Street Inn and really liked it. All rooms face the ocean, so you know you will have a view. The rooms are spacious, with a sitting area. The balconies have a couple chairs out there as well. It does not sit down on the beach, but just up on a small bluff if you will. To get to the beach, just go next door where there are stairs, or go towards Nye Beach about a block and it is easy street access. I like the location as it is close to the shops and restaurants at Nye Beach, so you don't have to drive if you don't want to.

Thanks. After looking at reviews here and websites sounds like The Whaler would be the best choice for me.

Columbus Day Weekend - wondering if this is a widespread holiday in Newport and Oregon generally? Will factor this in when choosing dates in October.

Do take note that some of the hotels are located at the top of the bluff - so there are stairs going down and up :-)

The Whaler is across the street from the Elizabeth Inn and is also close to Nye Beach shops and restaurants.

I'm not sure if hotels consider Columbus Day to be a "holiday" or not, Avoca. You'd probably just have to ask each one individually. If the weather is fine, there are usually more visitors in town that weekend. Which reminds me, October weather is *generally* reliably pleasant up until about the middle of the month. The later it is, the greater the chance of rain.

Thanks - will likely aim for week after Columbus Day wkend (Cdn. Thanksgiving here) that will make it still mid-October and sounds like average temps should be low 60s.

Would like to explore coast a bit north and south of there on day trips so being on top of the bluff not too much of a problem I'm thinking as mainly interested in ocean view and sound which seems to factor in the good reviews here on TA. Sounds like a neighbourhood feel being able to walk to shops and restaurants.

We stayed at the Whaler a couple of weeks ago, at summer rate of $109. But, it is across the street from ocean, though you do get a patio or balcony with ocean view. It is just up the street from the Elizabeth. By October, the casino in Lincoln City usually drops its hotel rates well below $100, Sunday-Thursday. Sign up for their emails and they will let you know when they are offering a good rate. The rooms are nothing great, but perfectly seviceable with ocean view.

Thanks. Now leaning towards a studio at Little Creek Cove. It gets great reviews here and I like to have cooking option for a couple of meals. It does sound like it is not right in town and will have car so likely not a problem.

Not a big casino fan so will likely not go that route. More interested in watching pounding surf, walking along ocean and taking day trips along coast.
