Journey Through Time Scenic Byway

The guide books say this byway takes a whole day to do, including via the John Day Fossil beds. I am thinking of taking it to get between booked hotels in The Dalles and Baker City. Is it a good idea or should I take US 84? My preference is for the byway but I wonder why it takes so long.

Bobbio returning to see the northwest? Does that mean another eruption due in the Cascades? Oh no!! Kidding (I hope). I'm a Californian who has traveled some in eastern Oregon. I love taking 395 north thru Oregon, and the byway sounds like some great scenic traveling. I avoid freeways as much as possible, unless I'm in more of a hurry. I agree the Dalles only worth one night, and have stayed in Best Western in John Day. Good all-purpose restaurant around corner. Kind of charming small-town CBD. Never been to Wallowa area; would like to someday.

Hi Bobbio,

Can not reccommend the jet boat ride from the Hells Canyon Dam enough. One of the best things I have ever done, scenery is just awesome.

Be sure to take the longer ride offered.

The drive from Joseph to Hells Canyon is great too. Baker City was a place we passed through too quickly, the old hotel is certainly worth a look.

Hells Canyon is one of the best kept secrets going.
