Hood River without a car

We are thinking of going to Hood River in December, arriving by bus. But it seems that a lot of the info we had is outdated, and we are wondering what we can do there without a car. Are there hiking trails from town? Bike trails? Nice walks? We also heard that you can't get across the bridge without a car; is this true?

Thanks.

Honestly, you might want to just rent a car. There is so much cool stuff to see around Hood River, I'd be sad if you were confined to feet.

There are tons of wineries around there... some close for winter, so check. If you are into wine, there are some really amazing wineries on the Washington side about 45 minutes east of Hood River. You cross onto the washington side and just head east. Cascade Cliffs Winery http://cascadecliffs.com and Marshal's Winery http://www.marshalsvineyard.com/ are fabulous. Some of my fondest memories of Oregon were when I went to those places. I have pictures of the wineries if you'd like to see.

And by cold -- it's not THAT cold in Oregon (I now live in Kentucky). maybe 40s. Just layer. But out in these wineries I mentioned, it is a desert climate. You won't believe the change in climate as you drive, it's a really amazing thing to do. I've recommended it to tons of friends, and NONE were disappointed. If you want more specific info or directions, send me a message, I'm happy to help.
