Driving from Portland to Coos Bay in Mid-March

My husband and I are driving from Portland to Coos Bay for our honeymoon (we live in the Midwest). We'd love any suggestions for stops along the coast that we shouldn't miss - thank you!!!

Congratulations! Can you tell us why you picked Coos Bay for your honeymoon? Of all the wonderful places along the Oregon Coast, that wouldn't pop in my mind as a honeymoon destination.

Places along the way that WOULD more likely occur to me might be Cannon Beach and Yachats.

My aunt and uncle own a vacation home on the ocean in Coos Bay, and so we're able to stay there at no charge. We love the outdoors, so plan to spend time hiking in the state parks, and also planned to go whale watching.

What makes Cannon Beach and Yachats wonderful? Are they far from Coos Bay?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Good reason to pick Coos Bay. Bandon is a good visit about 20 miles south of CB.

Suggest you drive out to Sunset Bay SP, 2 or 3 things to do there. Shore Acres SP has a nice garden, beaches at Sunset Bay and Bastendorf are good. Nice little golf course. Sunset Bay a great place to watch a sunset.. Docks at harleston can be interesting. watch somebody crab, or do it yourself

The drive on 101 from Florence to Yachats is one of best coast drives there is.

We plan to camp att Sunset Bay this summer, so I bought "Oregons South Coast in a Nutshell" which is both a map and description of things to do from. a few miles north of Florence to Brookings. Has maps of every town.

Also there is a mile by mile guide to 101. I usually have one here but can't find it this AM.

The town of Coos Bay isn't much to rave about, but a free vacation home on the oceanfront certainly is. It probably isn't in the actual city of Coos Bay, but along the road to the areas phirl mentioned...Sunset Bay and Shore Acres. Enjoy!

Yachats is just north of Florence and Cannon Beach is on the north coast. Yachats has great lodging right on the rocky shore, a small village atmosphere and proximity to Cape Perpetua and Newport. Cannon Beach is in a beautiful setting and is a busier art colony environment.

There are lots of hikes to be had in the area where you'll be. Not a lot of nightlife (except for the smoky environs of the Mill Casino).

Can't beat free lodging :-)

Definitely plan to drive up to Yachats one day. It's a leisurely less than two hour drive. Pick a clear day and drive to the top of Cape Perpetua and walk out to the lookout hut.

Also, inland from Coos Bay is a litle-known state park with two waterfalls. It's called Golden and Silver Falls SP and you can walk up to the top of each waterfall - at Silver Falls you'll be following an old road that used to go over the falls at the top.

In Coos Bay/North Bend itself there is the boardwalk also the Veteran's Memorial on the north side of the bay. Both are directly on Hwy 101.

Thanks everyone! I bought both books that phirl recommended. We definitely plan to check out Golden and Silver Falls state park, as well as Yachats. :)
