We want to stay downtown...

Hi! We are looking in to going to visit in the next few weeks & would love an affordable, clean place to stay within walking distance of the downtown area. Dog friendly would be nice, too! Any suggestions?

Since "affordable" means different things to different people, what is your budget?

Agree with half-Brit on affordability. Also, by "downtown" do you mean the Old Mill District??

When we don't stay with our kids, we usually pick the Comfort Inn in hwy 97 near Greenwood Ave. It's kind of in the middle of everything. Not fancy but pet friendly and clean.

You should also be aware that in Bend, one month a motel/hotel will cost $50/nt and the next month $100+!!

The Old Mill District has a Hilton Garden Inn - friends and family have stayed there and they all enjoy it. If you are looking at downtown "proper" check out McMenamins, The Oxford, and Phoenix Inn. I thing the Hilton Garden Inn and Phoenix Inn are dog friendly, should double check though.

Not sure if those fit in your "budget" but it's a good first round.

Well, the Sugarloaf was disgusting and further outside of things than we wanted to be last time. Not looking for top end, but would love to go out for the night & have a clean place to walk back to after beer tasting.

Thanks, Den. ;-)

It would also be great to know where you are planning to drink beer (or if you need tips on where to do that too). There are nine breweries within a mile of my office in Bend... but that doesn't mean I want to walk 2 miles from one to the other. For the extremes... if you are going to 10 Barrel, then you will want something westside. But Worthy is all the way at the other end of town on the eastside, 4 miles away. Lots of great places in between, too.

What's your dollar range, per night?

I like the idea of the Phoenix Inn. It's right above the Oxford on a slight "bluff" right in the heart of Bend's neat downtown so walkable to everything. Always like to walk up the stairs to it for the views of the cascades to the west.

Looks like the Phoenix Inn is about $95 to $150 for a midweek stay; $110 to $170 for weekend. We have no idea if OP considers that "affordable" or not. No mention of their pet policy and it also will be converting to a Double Tree Hilton this month.

The Benson is pet-friendly and reasonably priced. Try to book on POVA website. :).

Given the desire to walk and drink and stumble back to the hotel, I fully endorse the Phoenix Inn as nearly perfect, as our experience matches what you are wanting. How so? We have stayed at the Phoenix Inn twice during the Bite of Bend, when it featured the NW Distillers Show. That means there were dozens of distillers offering samples of their ware out in the street right down the stairs from the Phoenix Inn. The approach was to head down, try about 6 or 8 samples, eat something, go for a long walk, rest up in the room, and then do the whole thing again an hour or so later, and again, and again. So, yes, staggering back to the hotel in questionable condition without having to drive is easily done at the Phoenix Inn. And, even without the Distillers Show, there are plenty of breweries within easy walking, er, staggering, distance of the hotel. Plus, you get a decent breakfast as part of the deal at the hotel.
