Driving to Bend/Sunriver from Portland, Or

What are the driving conditions (road type, ease of drive) going from Portland to Bend. We are starting from downtown Portland, is it better to go the Mt Hood route, or drive to Salem and then east from there. Thanks

Both are nice and scenic routes, conditions fine. Since you live in Portland, you might try a loop, go one way, return the other. If you go east along the river, you could visit the Columbia R. Gorge scenic highway, unless you have already done so. You probably have or know this, but I'll throw it in anyway.

Others will comment, the only part of the drive that's "urban" is in the Gresham/Troutdale area, but soon left behind.

The route over Santiam pass (out of Salem) is windy, but I also think it's prettier. Depending on when you go it can be "congested" through Detroit Lake (people with boats, turning into campgrounds & day use areas) and Sisters (lots of pedestrians and festivals). I would check to see if there's something going on in Sisters the day you are planning to travel!

I like Voyaging's suggestion about taking a loop.
