Family destination?

My wife, myself, and our 14 year old daughter love Key West, but we are looking for a closer but similar place. Is Put In Bay an option? Is it ok for our daughter? Plenty of family things to do? Just looking for suggestions from those who know.

Put-In-Bay has plenty of things to do for young and old alike, from partiers to families, and from boaters to day trippers. There are many restaurant and bar options in the downtown strip area, most with live musical entertainment in the afternoons and evenings. There are many historical and family attractions scattered around the island that can easily consume a couple days of enjoyment as you putter around the island on a golf cart. The hotel and vacation home rental options are plentiful and a good time to book a summer vacation (weekends especially) is January to February, before the busy weekends sell out, as they always do.

A recommended site for more information and some pictures is http://www.ohio-put-in-bay.com where you will find some history of the island, links to lodgings, and info on attractions and activities.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Yes, Put-in-Bay is a good option. MGoBlueBoy has explained it quite well and there is much to keep you busy.

Another, and in my opinion, better option is Kelley's Island. KI is much more laid back and family friendly. Especially considering you have an impressionable teen. The downtown area of KI has some bars and can get a bit crazy on a weekend night but it is much easier to escape.

We stay on Kelley's Island and then take a day trip to PIB. The two islands are very close and there is the Jet Express that will take you between the two islands.

Whichever island you choose, you'll have a great time. On a warm sunny day sitting by the water, you'll forget you are in Ohio and can fool yourself into thinking you're in Florida. We love southern Florida but are quite happy to have the Lake Erie Islands so close.

Here is a link to a blog that a Canadian visitor wrote about her first experience to Put-in-Bay. It is quite a nice blog and will give you some first hand insight into the island...

Also, here is a link to the TA page about her trip...

Great posts by BlueBoy (tough year for the Wolverines) and Wendy!

Keep in mind that there are many things to do in the region, from Cedar Point in Sandusky to great wildlife preserves, such as Magee Marsh and Crane Creek.

Cleveland, with all of its attractions is just one hour east of Sandusky,, one of the ports for the Lake Erie islands (Port Clinton may be more convenient for Put-in-Bay or when coming from the west).

Ohio Amish Country, another of the top tourist attractions in northern Ohio, is 2-3 hours southeast of Sandusky.

Here are some travel articles about northern Ohio. In the first article, definitely read about the Lake Erie islands and the excellent Chicago Tribune article linked there.

Here's another thread that may prove useful, especially if you decide to visit Cedar Point in addition to the islands.

Good planning!
