Things to do in Svalbard in March - on a budget!

Hello

I am visiting Svalbard on 23-26 March 2014, staying at the Spitsbergen Hotel.

Does anyone have any tips/recommendations for things to do/places to eat on a budget?

All the trips I have been looking at seem very expensive. What would you say is the best trip to do whilst there?

Thanks

Katie

Longyearbyen is definitely not the cheapest destination, but there are a few things you can do to cut down on costs.

Try to book accommodation with cooking facilities, so that you can prepare your own meals and save your money for excursions. Spitsbergen Guesthouse has shared kitchens in each house, and the apartments at the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel Spitsbergen also offer a kitchenette with hot plates. Eating our you could look at the restaurants/bars that have daily specials at dinner time, these are reasonably priced. Breakfast buffet is included at most of the hotels and guesthouses, so be sure to have a big breakfast too.

Set off a half day to wander around the town, be sure to visit Svalbard Museum early in your trip and the church is also worth a visit. At the museum you can snag a copy of a leaflet called 'Longyearbyen: From Company town to modern settlement' (or something along those lines) which is a brand new product. Use that on your walking tour, and guide yourself through the town's history.

As others have mentioned, to get the most out of a trip to Spitsbergen, you should try and take a trip away from the townsite. A snowmobile trip to Tempelfjorden will take you to a fantastic ice covered fjord where seals are common, and polar bears not uncommon, however the highlight is the impressive blue wall of ice that is frozen into the fjord ice. This ticks a lot of boxes for a short visit. Other ideas might be a halfday dogsledding tour, or a trip to Barentsburg if you are interested in the cultural side of things too.

Thank you for all your tips it's really useful! We have booked a half day trip dog sledding trip. A breakfast buffet is included in our stay at the Spitsbergen Hotel so we will be sure to eat lots. We also get free coffee and waffles in the afternoon :)

I note that there is a maxi taxi tour which takes you around the area as well. Has anyone done this, and if so, would you recommend it?

Also, should I be taking ski jackets with me? Is it likely to be sub zero freezing temperatures at the end of March?

It is full blown winter in March - you need warm clothing indeed, especially if you plan for outdoor activities. There can be winds which makes it even chillier. The weather page is down at the moment, but you can study the statistics later on at www.yr.no

I do not think a taxi will get very far in winter, just around the settlement which you can walk anyway and to and from the airport - which you will probably do by airport coach if you are on a budget.
