hersonissos is very much a tourist place. the harbour is pretty but thats as close as you get to culture. In sept it has a good nightlife with lots of nice restaurants and also has decent bus links if you want to explore the island without hiring a car. if your into musumes and 'traditional' crete i would give it a miss. Maybe try ag nik?
I'm afraid that Hersonissos is very much a youth holiday resort these days in every sense of the word. But you are still very close to some of the best sights on the island.
These include Malia Palace, the Lassithi Plateau, Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga Island, Knossos and really relaxed little north coast villages such as Sissi and Milatos. Neapoli is a good town to visit and also Kritsa, both are close by.
At least Hersonissos will be a good base for you. We usually stay just outside Hersonissos, about 3km west at Anissaras. It is very relaxed and peaceful and has some good restaurants and bars. To find Anissaras, come up the big hill out of Hersonissos towards Heraklion, go past the left turn for Kastelli, and then take the next turning right, a little road that goes down to the sea.
Enjoy your stay!!
