Shillong trip in May 2014

Hi,

Traveling to Shillong. (May 18 to May 27).

We are 4 families (siblings), 17 members - 3 children+14 adults (15 years to 75years) - includes our mother who is 75 years. So we do not want to cram it in and keep it as less tiring as possible. Also we want to avoid day trips.

Tentative itinerary

Day 1 -- Reach Gauwahati from Chennai. Go to Umiam Lake halt

Day 2 -- Shillong City Sightseeing .Halt

Day 3 -- Proceed to Sohra, Sohra Sightseeing. Halt (Sohra is Chirrapunji)

Day 4 -- Sohra Sightseeing. Halt

Day 5 -- Proceed to Mawlynnong, Sightseeing. Halt

Day 6 -- Mawlynnong Sightseeing Halt

Day 7 -- Proceed to Shillong. Enroute check out Mawphlang Sacred Groves. Halt

Day 8 -- Shillong Outskirts ( Smit + Laitlum Canyons ) sightseeing. Halt

Day 9 -- Shillong City Sightseeing .Halt

Day 10 -- Proceed to Gauwahati

My questions:

1. Do we need 2 days at Mawlynnong? Would accomodation be a big problem for 17 people ar Mawlynnong?

2. Is it too leisurely or just fine given that some members cannot walk too much.

3. Is it possible to go near the tourist spots using a private vehicle? Idea is to avoid walking as much as possible. Interested people would walk.

4. Do we need 2 nights at Umiam Lake? I added this so that we did not have to rush for boating immediately after reaching the place.

Laxminarayan,

Any luck with the Tempo Traveller? I believe there are 9, 12, 16, 18, 20 ,22 & 26 seaters for such vehicles, which will suit your trip very well.

Any other doubts, I will be happy to help.

Karikor,

No luck yet on Tempo Traveller. Any known sources are welcome.

Also debate in family on number of vehicles as some members can get ready fast and leave little early in first vehicle and then the rest in second. But your itinerary seems great and is covering a lot of ground. Planning to add Vhmd's suggestion into it. We may leave out Jaintia Hills as the trip is now 9days and not 10days. May 19th-May27th.

In that case you will not get to cover VHMD's suggestion. Since Nongkhnum will take one day itself and Syndai Cave & Tyrshi falls are part of the list in the Jaintia Hills leg. Only Byrdaw falls may be covered when you are on your way to Mawlynnong. There are some nice places around Mawlynnong & Dawki that you can also visit.

By the way, if one vehicle is not working out for you, you can then always hire 2 sumos.

Hi Karikor,

Here is an update on our travel plans for May 19th to May 27th. Most of it is inline with your suggestions.

May 19th --- 1st day- Reach Guwahati. Proceed to Mawphlang Sacred Grooves. Mid way stop at Umiam Lake Resort for lunch. Spend some

time in the water sports complex and nehru park located next to it. Take guide for 1-2 hours and roam inside the forest. Halt

May 20th --- 2nd day - Day trip to Mawsynram and Jakrem hot springs. Proceed to Sohra. Halt

May 21st ---- 3rd day - Relaxing Sohra sightseeing. Halt

May 22nd --- 4th day - Double Decker Living Roots Bridge trek at Nongriat. Rest. Halt

May 23rd ---- 5th day - morning Caving at Mawmluh (between nongriat and sohra). After lunch proceed to Mawlynnong. Halt

May 24th --- 6th day - Proceed to Dawki for Water Sports. Evening proceed to Thadlaskein. Halt

May 25th -- 7th day - Jaintia Hills sightseeing. Proceed to Shillong. Halt

May 26th --- 8th day - Shillong Sightseeing. Halt

May 27th -- 9th day - morning proceed to Guwahati.

We have booked at Cherra Holiday Resort for May 20 to May22 (3 nights). We are in the process of making the other bookings as suggested by you.

A few questions are in order...

1. We would like to halt at Umaim Lake on 26th so that the trip to Guwahati is shorter by 30min to 1hr. Do you think it might make sense to book there itself for May 25th also (instead of booking a different hotel in Shillong)

2. Is it possible to do a day trip to Nongriat and back from Sohra (We have 3 children below 10yrs and 3 girls in the age group of 15 to 19yrs) or would you suggest stay at Nongriat. How many people can Nongriat accomodate? Some might prefer to stay back at Sohra.

Will discuss on places to visit soon in more detail soon.

Regards

Lakshminarayanan

Hello,

Good to see your plan is moving ahead. Now coming to your questions-

1. I will not advice you to halt on the 25th in Umiam lake as even though it is just 15km from Shillong, it does take time when you enter and leave Shillong city due to traffic snarls. So you will loose time when you start for your Shillong sightseeing. However. It is a good idea to stay on the 26th night as you will not have to face any Shillong traffic snarls while leaving for Guwahati on the 27th morning.

2. I guess you can decide amongst yourselves who will want to stay at Nongriat. I would recommend the people who will do the Mawmluh cave to return back up on the same day, since it will not be easy to do the caving after climbing uphill for 2 hours. A good nights rest may help you regain our energy. As for the others who cannot do the Mawmluh caving, they can stay at Nongriat, explore the place and return back up to pick the caving group from Mawmluh.

For homestays at Nongriat, here are the contacts-

1. 9436739655/9615252655

2. 8014819274

Also I would like you to check the following site:

www.villagegetaways.in

You may consider staying at the Travellers Nest at Ialong on 24th, so that you can do the Jaintia Hills sightseeing on 25th.

Regards,

Karikor
