Where to stay in Holmes Co

We are looking for suggestions for lodging and eateries in Holmes Co for the last week in April for 4 seniors citizens on a meandering trip.

Thanks,

You will LOVE it there! Check out oacountry.com and there will be tons of ideas. Our favorite place to eat is Boyd Wurthmann's in Berlin. It's a local place and the food is fantastic. It's larger inside than it looks from the outside. Sometimes there is a line. Be sure to go to Kidron and check out Lehman's. You can look at their website before you go. We stayed at Graystone Cottage the last time we were there. We have also stayed at Wilmot (Amish Door) and Berlin Suites. You may want to check out Holmes with a View. Have fun!

The Amish Door is great - if you're interested in them join their e-mail list. They often give specials to their e-mail list. It's my parents favorite place to stay when they visit Amish Country. http://www.amishdoor.com

I've stayed here and really liked it. Great setting without anything else around-- continental breakfast in the am and coffee, snacks and a harpist in the evening the Friday night we were there.

I will also 2nd Boyd and Wurthman's for a favorite place to eat. Is right on the main road in Berlin. AWESOME home cooked food and lots of it and comes with home made bread. Also, there's a farm/bakery place on the road to Charm (between the Guggisberg Inn and Berlin) that has the BEST bakery goods! Can't remember the name, but....they had excellent baked goods. Polished off the goodies in the car and went back for more to take home :)

Make sure you visit Walnut Creek and the Walnut Creek Cheese Store...

http://www.walnutcreekcheese.com/

It's something else to walk around and enjoy everything going on!!! Sample all the jams and jellies, have lunch and sit upstairs, then get some of their ice cream for dessert. Hope you have lots of room for things to take home, their bulk food section (you can buy tiny packages of all sorts of things) is wonderful, look for the recipe sheet that gives all the info for their soups, cakes, etc.

There are several nice wineries in that neck of the woods, if you are interested, as well. Love the Guggisberg Cheese Shop, lots of goodies there.

The countryside is so beautiful up there, we've made several treks lately, we're moving to SC in the near future and wanted to finish purchasing our Amish built furniture before we go.

This is a great place to find gifts that are a little different...

I know I didn't help w/a place to stay, but lots of ideas of what to visit!!! Hope you enjoy!

Thank you for the wonderful ideas. Yes, we need information on everything fun, not just lodging and food. Where is the best pie?

My husband is from Virginia and makes the best cornbread so we are always on the lookout for grist mills to haul home course ground corn meals and other grains. We love wineries. I think this will be a wonderful trip. Hope to see teams working the fields.

How about anitque shops and flea markets? What is open that time of the year?

Thanks again for all the tips.

Okay, here's some wineries...

Make sure you visit Keim Lumber (I know it sounds crazy), you will be amazed...

If you enjoy seeing beautiful woodwork, this store is something else.

There is a restaurant right at the bottom of the hill in Charm, where Keim is that I hear is very good, have not been there.

There are plenty of antiques and flea markets in Holmes County. Make sure you visit several of the furniture stores (Ole Mill, in Charm and Schrock's in Berlin are good).

One more thing, as far as I know, everything is open all year, this is where these people live and work. In the fall we did see teams of horses pulling huge farm equipment, so you may see work going on in the fields in the spring. The funniest thing we saw was a horse and buggy pulling up to the window at McDonalds!!! Some of the roads are made w/buggy lanes on each side.

Pick up a map as soon as you can when you get there and make sure you hit some of the smaller side roads (you'll have to in some cases to get from one place to another). Either print out or write down info from the websites we've given you, look at the map to make a reasonable tour and put the first address in your GPS. This is what we have been doing and we have gone on some really interesting back roads that we wouldn't have bothered with otherwise. There are huge farms up there, all neat as a pin.

another good stop: http://www.coblentzchocolates.com/

You will be hard pressed to find a BAD pie at any Amish Country bakery, by the way :)

Another good stop is Lehman's Hardware in Kidron - http://www.lehmans.com. It's a hardware store like no other! They specialize in non-electric goods. My husband and I can easily spend a whole afternoon in there poking around.

this is off topic a bit, but wanted to be sure you know this--

Do not take photos of the Amish people. HUGE no no. See them working out in the fields from s distance, okay-- but no people photos.
