4WD or AWD Rental Vehicle?

We have found a place that will rent us a 4WD or AWD and with an extra insurance payment we are allowed on the unsealed roads on the Flinders Ranges. I know the 4WD (Mitsubishi Pajero) has got better clearance but it is more expensive. We are hoping to go places like Chambers Gorge in October. Do you think we need a 4WD or would an AWD (they suggest a Nissan Xtrail) suffice?

You would get to the car park of Chambers Gorge in an AWD. Likewise Parachilna and Brachina Gorges etc. It gets trickier in that area after rain and the creeks start flowing.

a 4wd will always be better than an AWD in the Flinders, especially if you expect to really get off the primary roads and explore. If money is an issue then simply hire the AWD and talk to the locals about what is likely to be accessible for you when you get into the area. If one place is restricted there will be plenty of other places which will be accessible for you
