Accommodation Base for Flinders Ranges

Where is the best accommodation base for the best sightseeing in Flinders Ranges. Looking for a mid price range cabin or motel style room without strong smelling cleaning chemicals. Perhaps a b&b could be a better option. How far ahead would you need to book for travel mid to late October?

My best options are either Rawnsley Park or Wilpena Pound or this B&B in Hawker http://meaneysrest.com.au/.

Have stayed in and enjoyed all over the years.

Having stayed at Rawnsley Park and Wilpena Pound recently my vote would be Rawnsley. In an eco villa if the budget allows. You can easily drive into wilpena for the day, i urge you to take one of their walkabout tours with the local Adnamathnya guides if you can...very interesting.

rawnsley definitely for meals and accom though. iMHO and if you can do itt, don’t miss seeing the

Pound from the air,, either helicopter ior plane

Another vote for Rawnsley park ... especially if u stay in one of their eco villa's. We really enjoyed our stay & it was really good base for exploring the ranges.

Thanks everyone for this great advice. How soon would you need to book accommodation for October this year?

We will only be doing easy walks of no more than 2km, Do you have any suggestions of the most interesting hikes? Planning to stay 2- 3 nights so what are the best scenic drives? TIA

IF you are going to be there over October long weekend OR during school holidays you probably should have already booked!

BTW the eco villas at Rawnsley Park are very far from mid priced as the OP requested - though there are other much cheaper options there which are still good IME.

Re walks - the walk from the Wilpena resort into the pound is lovely.

Scenic drives- Parachilna Gorge out to the Prairie Pub and Brachina Gorge are my faves.

Will you have 4wd or at least a high clearance SUV because creek crossings can be rough.

Rawnsley Park has some really great self-guided walks from your doorstep and there are accommodation options for lower/mid-budget travellers. Rawnsley has everything from basic unpowered tent sites to top of the range luxury. I am sure there will be something to suit.

I would book ASAP as it's peak time in the Flinders in October.

Another vote for Rawnsley Park Station. We have just returned from there after staying in their Eco Villas. If your budget can allow would highly recommend. They are situated insofar as you can capture sunrise/sunsets without leaving your accommodation. However we chose to venture out within the park and were not disappointed. Either way if you want to chill out and explore Rawnsley Park itself there are plenty of hikes to do etc. We ventured out from the Park and self drove the Bunyeroo Gorge and Brachina Gorge ending up at the Praire Hotel at Parachilna. The gorges were a highlight. We were only there for a few days, but it has whet our appetite for more.
