Snorkeling

Can anyone please advise on a good way to do some snorkeling and see fish and coral on magnetic island next week? Family if two adults and two teenagers.

Magnetic Island is pretty close to shore (about a 25 minute boat ride) and most snorkelling tours envolve a day trip to the reef. I don't think there is much coral to see from any part of Magnetic Island and what is there will not be anything like you see from a tour. For example from Cairns you still must travel 2 hours by boat to access the reef. A big misconception is the reef is at our door step when if fact it's a long way out. Magneitc Island has great swimming beaches but I doubt you will find what you are looking for unless you take a tour out to the reef.

We DO have some good coral and fish on the island. It's fringing coral, so different to outer reef, but still amazing. Australia's first (legal) snorkel trail has been developed on Magnetic Island - look at the following link

whatsonmagneticisland.com.au/magnetic-island…

Nelly Bay trail shows some large types of coral and the Geoffrey Bay trail is amazing for fish species - take a bag of bread with you for added excitement. But it will all be dependent on wind strength and direction. Arthur & Florence Bays offer good pockets of coral/fish. The road to these 2 bays is a bit rough, so not all drivers wish to take their vehicles down there. If walking, 2-3km one way walk from the bus stop. If you'll be here Sat 29 & Sun 30.9.12, low winds are predicted, so looking good. Enjoy!
