Worth visiting both Cape Tribulation and Kuranda Skyrail?

Hi,

I'm planning a trip to Cairns in May, and was wondering if it was worth going on both the Kuranda Skyrail and visiting the Cape Tribulation area? Are they the same thing?

If anything, I am currently more swayed to visiting Cape Tribulation rather than going on the Kuranda Skyrail but from what everyone has posted it seems Kuranda is 'Must do' in Cairns.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Skyrail is a Gondala experience designed for mass tourism market and day visitors to have a taste of the rainforest.

Cape Tribulation is in the World Heritage Area and its rainforests are much more a wilderness experience and more elusive. As a traveller you have to make the effort to get into the forest - there is no gondola.

If you go to Cape Trib, plan to stay several days, and plan to take a guided tour into the forest with someone who knows it, and you will have a memorable experience and learn a lot. You can also visit Emmagen Creek and swim in a beautiful rainforest swimming hole, follow creeks upstream deep into the forest and really feel what it is all about.

If you only have ONE day, then go and do Skyrrail, but if you have a few days, go and stay at Cape Trib and skip Skyrail.

I loved Kuranda but I have a massive fear of sky rails - so I took the train both ways and wasnt disappointed.

Kuranda Skytail is worth the effort, I'm not fussed on the village once you arrive but the scenery is gorgeous.

CT is just a tiny village on a beach tucked in the National Park. It depends on your time available..out of the 2 IMO the Skytrail is the best option.

I would not miss out on some time in Cape Trib area if you can get there you must go - it is amazing but you need a couple of days to really get any feel of what it is all about. You can do croc spotting on Coopers Creek - we saw loads of them. The reef trips from here are alot less commercialised - we only had 12 on our trip. Although we did also do a great trip from Cairns but there were 50 or so on that boat.

We did jungle surfing up at Cape Trib, like flyong fox zip wires through the rainforest canopy - awesome!!!

Lots of swimming holes to explore and fabulous un touched beaches!!! AMAZING - go there!!!We stayed at Cape Trib exotic fruit farm it was FANTASTIC!!!

You need a car though I would not join a tour - all too quick and just whistle stop tour.

We did Kurunda Sky rail - views are fabulous but the village is VERY TOURISTY and we did not hang around but the trip is worth it

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Beautraveller, your tips sound great. Can you suggest names of tour operators for reef day trips?

Also, how do I get to the swimming holes and untouched beaches you've suggested? Can I drive myself in a normal car, or do I need a 4WD? Also, Are you able to point out where these fabulous places are?? It sounds like something I'd love to visit!!!

Thanks for your help!

It's a easy drive to Cape Trib/Daintree on paved roads about 2.5 hours from Cairns. You arrive at the Daintree River and cross by barge and you are in one of the most amazing exotic places.

Things to do: Daintree river for crocodile spotting: Nice and Easy tours was good as it's a small boat with a good guide. Some boats are really large and loaded full of passengers, not very intimate.

Guided Daintree Walk by Prue of Cooper Creek Wilderness was great.

Jungle Surfing through the canopy of the treetops which can be booked when you arrive.

Many great beaches to explore.

There is quite a bit of accommodation from budget to higher end. We stayed at Cockatoo Hill Retreat, a wonderful boutique with four treehouses perched on the edge of the rainforest. Take a look at the reviews and pics on this site it is the nicest accommodation in the area with wonderful gardens, pool and owners who will help you plan and pre book any activities you are interested in.

Do pay attention in what creeks you are swimming in as there are crocs. Ask the locals and pay attention to the signs they are there for a reason.

If you are interested in a day trip from Cape Trib consider the drive to Cooktown, but you will need a 4WD. Really amazing crossing small creeks and driving through aboriginal communities.

PM if you have any further questions.

A normal car was fine for us, you only need four wheel drive if you go past cape tribulation.

All the beaches are amazing up at Cape Tribulation just keep away from estuaries and crocs!!!

We did a reef trip from Cairns with Passions of paradise, that was a fabulous trip but there were about 50 people on board, we got to swim with a loggerhead turtle - awesome!!!

The trip from cape trib was with Ocean safari, just a half day but you go out on a fast rib and you are there in 30mins, there were only 12 of us on that trip and the guide gave us almost personal attention.

And the trip on the boat was great.

The croc trip was on coopers creek. Can't recall the name of the guide.

Jungle surfing was with Jungle adventures.

Hope you have a fab time
