Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation self drive

We have got a week in Port Douglas in November hoping to recharge our batteries after a busy time in Victoria and NSW.

We were planning on basing ourselves in Port Douglas for a few days doing day trips - snorkelling, Kuranda etc. Then hiring a car to drive up to Cape Trib in one day then back the next. It sounds a long haul in one day plus we have the time to stay up there.

Could someone please share views on these plans.

Thank you

PD to CT? Around 80km (50 miles). A bit over an hour without stops and good connection with the car ferry.

PD to Cape Trib takes no time at all. Self drive is not a bad option (that's what we did) and with an overnight stay you could see a fair bit.

The boardwalks are great. You must take a stroll along Cape Tribulation beach too. Do a crocodile cruise and if you have time stop at the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

If you're flying out of Cairns then do Kuranda on the way to or from Port Douglas as it's only 20 minutes from Cairns.

You'll definitely have the best reef boat options from Port Douglas. I recently went out with SilverSonic and it was a great day including snorkelling at three sites on the Agincourt Reef. But there are plenty of other boats to choose from...

Port Douglas is only one and a half hours south of Cape Tribulation, so it is an easy drive. Make sure that the road is open - this is the wet season and some of the causeways may be flooded.

Many people who come to cape trib for just one night are surprised at how much there is to do in the area, and wish that they had planned to stay for longer.

You need to plan your time carefully or you will just end up driving up and back without discovering all the things you can do, if only you had booked before leaving - Jungle Surfing, Fruit tasting, night walks etc.

I agree with the above comment - I would do more time in Cape Trib than Port Douglas. Amazing place we were there a few years ago you can have a mile strech of beach to yourself, loads of jungle stuff we did the ziplines - brilliant. Also Dragon fly cafe is a gorgeous restaraunt really good food friendly staff and beautiful setting - when we were there a green frog leapt on to a mans face - he was so drunk it took him half a minute before he realised!
