Is Golden Sands For Me

Hi, sorry to be really broad but I am looking for places for my partner and I to holiday next year as I like to try new places and I had never considered GS until now...

We are in our mid thirties and we are not ones to sit around the pool all day, we like to go out and about even if its just a walk along the prom. We like to go on organised excursions and / or public transport to see new places. I have been looking at SB but I think I would like to go somewhere a little quieter that is more aimed at families and couples.

I am looking at June or September, I know the weather is not the best at this time, but I would of thought its still short and t shirt weather. Is that correct? I do like to have a wander out in the evening, maybe have a drink but we are not into noisy clubs. I am not after a large resort, but definitely enough to get us out of the hotel for a while.

The places I have been recently include Tossa De Mar, Salou, Malta, Torremolinos. Do you think GS may be for me?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

In a nutshell yes. I think GS is a great resort. If you visit in Sept make sure it`s at the start of the month.

One of the regulalrs on here goes there every year. I`m sure he will give you more details about the resort if he reads the post.

Best,

Paul

I visited GS this August for the first time .I will NOT be returning!

weather wasnt great even in August, Choice of resturants is a joke and the food was bad in the 3 resturants i visited, its also very sleazy in some parts.

There are far better places to visit throught Europe.

golden sands is not to big but it you want a noisy club seen then its there but if you don't then that is also there and they don't cross so you will never have to see the club seen if you don't want to golden sands is more of a family resort there are still many bars and restaurants but the all in hotels is taking its toll on the restaurants I myself like to sit in the white lady on the beach front its just a bar to drink beer talk get ice cream and cake there is no entertainment at the white lady more for siting and talking

but if you want entertainment there are many bars that have that even Elvis is still alive in golden sands and in the summer they put on free stage shows in the centre area they also have a bar so you can get a beer and watch the free show some good shows some not so good

nowhere in golden sands if far so you can walk from one end to the other easy

I go in august but I have been in June and I found it to be hot some say you need long sleeves at night in June not me air con on all night so not cold you can get the odd day of rain but still not cold

the resort has the main road running around the resort not through it so if you want to use the bus you have to walk out to the main road the bus is cheap but can be along walk from the hotel

I use taxis you don't get the rip off taxis in golden sands a golden sands taxi is based in golden sands mostly attached to hotels so they have the hotel name on the taxi so this tends to stop the rip off taxis a taxi from Varna can drop you in golden sands but he is not allowed to wait in golden sands looking for work he drops you and leaves a taxi from golden sands can not use the taxi ranks in Varna

I get a return taxi from golden sands to Varna for around 50 lev return pay on return I get dropped at McDonalds in Varna stay all day in Varna have dinner then phone my taxi or get the restaurant to phone my taxi and he comes and gets me the golden sands taxis are not on meters so you just arrange the price before you go as I say Varna return is around 50 lev return

there is lots to do all the normal beach rides bars clubs restaurants shops ect but whatever you see in the shops / market stalls will be cheaper in Varna still cheap but less in Varna

Varna is also a good day out Varna mall and the grand mall the cathedral the sea gardens is a nice walk

bars and restaurants the dolphin show for a price you can swim with the dolphins

cape kaliakra balchik is also not to far aladja monastery and others places to visit you can even go to nessebar shopping but that is a all day thing its a long way you can also get trips to Bucharest I think that is a two day thing there will be quit a few British in golden sands but in real terms British are in a low percentage but most Bulgarians in the resort do speak English so we are not really catered for you can get a English breakfast but they don't really know what a English breakfast should be but its fine anyway

its safe its safe to go out and about taxis bus ect same as at home there are lots of excursions on sale on stalls all over the resort they are safe to use its safe to hire a car and drive but parking in golden sands is a problem if you don't park right it will be taken away I just use taxis as and when I want them golden sands is well laid back nothing is to much for them I was in a restaurant once and my son wanted a kebab so the waiter went over to the kebab stall and got one for him that's what its like easy going

I used to go to Spain then I was sent to work in Bulgaria never would have gone apart from that took the family on holiday went with my children now with my grandchildren so yes its for you

there are places in Europe that are better but there are also places in Europe far worse but there are few that are as cheap or as easy going as golden sand but some people do get offended by posters of half naked woman or stalls selling knifes or restaurants with a toilet out side or even being asked to wait to have your mini bar checked before you leave the hotel but luckily 99.9% of the people coming to golden sands are not offended by such things and have a very good time

I have never been to a holiday resort where the bar staff buy you a drink restaurant staff have time to talk with you where if you don't want to use a restaurant the door staff will not just turn away from you but will still stand a talk with you I have never been in a resort where the bar staff take you to the bars that they drink in or to the party's that they go to I have never been to a air port where the security guard comes over to you and shakes your hand and said I was your waiter last year at the hotel or walked through the city streets and have people stop and say hi I was you waitress last year I have never been to a place where the people were so friendly and they are not just after your money I had a taxi driver say to me when I was trying to give him a Tipp no you have already given me to much or a waitress on my last day when I was just getting rid of my change the Tipp you have given is to big now some people may think that there are better places in Europe but you don't get treated like that you pay for it Bulgaria is much more equal you don't have the I am much more important than you because I am the customer and you are the slave and its a much more open way of things if someone wants to sleep in the road you walk around them its not a problem if someone wants to sell knives its not a problem you don't have to buy them if someone wants to put up posters of half naked woman its not a problem you don't have to look at them and if you don't like a outside toilet its not a problem you don't have to use it golden sands is well laid back very easy going no matters what some people may say some people just want rules and more rules

Hi all. Thank you sooo much for the detailed replies. I really do appreciate it. I was just concerned that it would be a little too quiet for me.

I haven't thought of nessebar, but I will definitely have a look.

Thanks again :)

Do not go to golden Sands and do not go to the International Hotel Casino and Tower Suites - go to Croatia or Poland

Hi again, I am looking at smartline madara hotel. Can anybody please advise if the location is OK and if there is a bus stop near by? Where could we get buses too please? I have noticed that most of the reviews are from non British guests, so I am concerned I would be the odd one out! Thanks again :)

smart line madara hotel is a fair way up the hill from the beach not really far in distance but it is quite a hill most of the walking along the sea front most people do in the evening will be at the bottom of that hill

to get a bus you would have to walk further up the hill to the main road or down to the main golden sands gate I think the bus is the 409 Varna to balchik bus its slow up hill down hill stopping all over but it is cheap

for me a taxi is much better door to door after a long day out a walk from the bus stop back to the hotel is never fun plus a taxi driver will tell you all you need to know

one thing the biggest complaint in Bulgaria is hotel food if you don't have a good hotel all in or not you will be eating out

I only ever go B&B I spend a lot of time out I don't do the must be back at the hotel for dinner time and its cheap to eat out

I will warn you that the hill from the sea front back to the hotel is a real hill

and most of the bars and restaurants will be down hill from you

in general brits are in the lower numbers but many others speak English any way I have in the past been to golden sands for two weeks and not spoken to another English person

most British tend to go with Balkan holidays so you tend to get more British in hotels that Balkan offer like the arabella or bolero ( very good all in hotel good food ) hotel Lilia or palm beach hermitage has quite a few but over all British are probably less than 10 % across the whole resort

the young British lads tend to go to the cheap hotels near the back like the varshava or shipka

I would say that a good hotel for you would be the vistamar or even the metropol a adults only hotel

they are on the flat easy walk to the centre of golden sands two mins or a easy walk to the very quite end of golden sands down to the marina two min right on the sea front but a long walk to the bus stops

you would find many more British in nessebar

but for me my view only its a bit like a extension of sunny beach

why not take a look at the Balkan holidays web site lots to look at nessibar golden sands and others you don't have to book with them but lots to see prices are also good

I would also think that June would be better than September you see golden sans is not a all year round resort June would be near the start of the season September near the end of the season saying that I go the last two weeks in august and all is in full swing but things start to close down after that its when its gone its gone then don't restock near the end of the season
