Thinking of a visit - can you sell Bulgaria to me?!

Never been to Bulgaria - we are regulars to Turkey which we love, also loved Croatia and have lately been to various parts of Spain as well.

A work colleague has been raving about Bulgaria - must admit up to now everyone I know who'd been there didn't have much positive to say about it.

We don't particularly like all inclusive but good food is very important to us and we prefer B & B with a nice selection of good restaurants to eat at in the evenings. Also - what is there to do besides the beach?

Your recommendations would be appreciated please.

We went to Sozopol this year for a second time and it is lovely, nowhere near as commercialised as Sunny Beach and it has retained lots of the old buildings, ruins, an old Fortress, cobbled streets and the people were just lovely.

We caught the Hydrofoil over to Nessebar and then went into Sunny Beach for the day. Lots of lovely little shops, the people do speak very good English or they will find someone who can!!! There are two beaches, the bay in the old town and Harmanite Beach in the new town, both very clean with watersports and plenty of fast food places if you want something quick for lunch.

We stayed bed and breakfast and spent just over £600 for two weeks, including lunches and main meals, drinks (and we certainly didn't scrimp on anything), brought back tobacco for family, bought presents and I would say that is cheap. We can spend that much money in Cyprus in a week.

I would thoroughly recommend Sozopol as a quaint little town but with everything you could possibly need.

How does that sound?

Sharon

You can get to Nessibar for one lev on the bus. I like to walk along the beach from SB which takes about 30 minutes and bus it back.

St Vlas on the other side of the bay is also worth a visit and costs just one lev on the bus.

Best,

Paul

Sarafovo is a bit away from everything. Depends on what you want out of your holiday. If it's just relax on the beach - you'll be fine. However there's nothing much to do there.

The city of Bourgas is 10 min. away by local bus (about 7 miles) - there you can walk and shop along the promenades or in one of the three malls. Or visit some of the discos in the city.

Sarafovo is where Bourgas airport is, never stayed there but I should imagine you would have to put up with a lot of aircraft noise. As Peter mentioned above, you are not too far from the city of Bourgas, where you will find the lovely sea gardens, as well as shopping and a good pavement cafe culture.

Oh how I have loved reading some of the comments regarding how cheap Bulgaria is,I went to Sunny Beach 18 yrs ago yes 18 yrs ago, there was 1 hotel which looked like a concrete prison, rusty balconys, our room was spotlessly clean, food in the hotel well shall I just say we only had 1 meal in a 14 day stay, hired a Lada car it cost me nearly as much as the holiday, had to go on the bus all the way to the Holiday Inn in Sofia,to get it as when I asked the rep about a hire car in sunny beach she looked horrified, and said " you can drive over here" we'll I did nearly 900 miles in 12 days ,boy did we get about, people say it is cheap now,we found it hard to spend our money,3 of us were having starter, fillet steak pepper sauce, fresh veg and when I say fresh have any of you been taken to the rear of a resturant shown into a lovely vegetable garden and asked what you would like?well believe me that happened every time we dined out, home made deserts, with drinks, beer, brandys, total cost for all 3 less than £5 we were tipping most meals more than the cost of the meal,my overriding memory will be of a country who's people are one of the warmest I have come across, beaches you only ever seen in films,( nessibar bye the way was a tiny little fishing harbour with no hotels the lovely church so unspoiled ) I know times change and things must move on but..........oh for thos long hot days on the deserted beaches of sunny beach

Hi Gazboy.

just reading your post brings back some memories we first went to Bulgaria in 1989 just at the time before the Berlin wall was breached the first visit we became friendly with the staff in the hotel one of the reception staff invited us to her house for a meal with her family what a night that was we were then invited to visit her cousins grandmother in a tiny little place called Obzor where we had a drink on an old cometa which had been converted into a bar then on to Grandmothers house where as you say the veg was fresh because you were asked to pick it unfortunately this caused some concern to our daughter who was only 8 at the time as she was asked which chicken she liked and was very upset when it was caught and served for our meal we also made some very good friends who were part of the party fighting for Bulgarian freedom from Communism they were part of CDC whose motto seemed to be vremeto enace on our next visit we were happy to go through the streets of Pomorie at midnight when the first free deputy was elected and have a photo signed by him as a very important memory and even now after many more visits we still find new places and experiences because Bulgarian people would rather do you a good turn than a bad one. looking forward now to our visit this year which is about our 32 time over the last 24 years

Robbie
