Safety in Waikkal

I am going to Waikkal at the end of this month and am obviously concerned about safety there. Is it ok to go out and about in the local area or is it better to stay on the hotel complex? Any good advice greatly appreciated regarding keeping safe.

Hi there,

Criminality towards tourists is generally relatively low in Lanka. This has also to do with the willingness of the country to preserve a good reputation in this respect; the Tourist Police is much more determined to solve things than normal police, and generally mentioning the word alone helps in tricky situations - e.g. when you got involved in a traffic accident.

That having said, there is no or hardly street lighting in the country, so after dark better stay inside. Daylight you are very welcome to scour the streets and shops around Waikkal, though there is far less to see there than in main town Negombo. Should all be very safe, quite unlike e.g. many places in South America.

All the best,
