Hi Will,

Conversion between Rs and Sterling is up to you, we only do it often with EUR and USD. But here are some options, with distances.

Note: overall price = 2 x distance and driver's fee of about Rs 200-300, and of course entrance. For something like Pinawella or Anuradhapura temple that is often around Rs 1000-1500 (!) for tourists, per person.

Km price is presently around Rs 33. So an example: Wilpattu would be 2 x 100 x 33 is Rs 6600 and then fee on top of it.

* Wilpattu national park. Must be there dusk or dawn, so either leave early from Waikkal (4 AM) or return 9-10 PM. 100 km.

* Pinawella Elephant orphanage, 120 km. However often combined with Kandy (20 km extra), but then it becomes a multi-day trip as Kandy has many nice sights like Temple of Tooth and Botanical Garden.

* Anuradhapura and Mihintale old cities, full of temples and sacred spots. 150 km.

* Old rock fortress halfway towards A'pura, around 80 km. Again forgot the name. It is smaller than Sigiriya but still quite nice - if you e-mail at erikdr@popmail.com I will start finding it in Lonely Planet. Fortress is smaller so can be climbed mid-day also.

(You can NOT do Sigiriya itself as day trip, because though close to A'pura you need to start climbing before 9:30 of after 3 PM to prevent physical meltdown. Can be done with overnight stay.)

* Boat trip on Dutch canal, half day, 0 km.

* Colombo sightseeing & shopping, 30 km.

Have a nice time again,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
