Hi Elvis,

Even though based at a hotel you can do any trips you want.

Trouble is, most of the hotels are half a days travelling from the easiest attractions and more or less a full day from most of them, so you're limited on the time you're happy to spend away from your hotel and your intended means of travel.

Firstly, the cultural triangle. Starting with the two ancient cities, Anuradhapura and Polonorua. Anuradhapura is the oldest but they both deserve equal time as they are completely different.

Between these, there's a couple of places I really like.

Ritigala, a series of ruins on a forest covered hillsdie, Very important place in Budhist mythology.

Mihintale.. More hills, almost 2000 steps up to a temple and Dagoba atop the mountain.

Aukana, huge and beautiful carved rock Budha.

Matale rock temple where you can see the ancient art of palm leaf writing. ( All the ancient Budhist scriptures are written on palm laevs and here you can pay a couple of rupees and get you own little welcome message in Sinhalese on your own palm leaf.

Kandy, Tooth Temple , Botanical gardens, cultural shows, etc.

The hill country.. Cloud forests, mountains, valleys filled with " rain forest" vegitation, water falls, tea plantations, etc.

And, of course, all the small towns with colourful markets, the small villages, where tourists just don't go and you get a wonderful welcome just because you take the trouble to go there.

If you enjoy hiking, there,s a never ending suply of tracks, some easy some not so, to follow that will allways wander through scenery like you'd only dream about.

And , if you like the feeling of being ontop of the world, then climb Adams peak, The Worlds End on Hortons Plains, Little Adams peak or Ella Rock, at Ella, Liptons seat near Haputale or any of the many water falls scattered around.

The coast, especially the south coast where the beaches are long, clean and empty, plus lots of smaller attractions like Rekawa turtle preservation beach where you lie on the beach , looking up through the gently swaying palms, the sky covered in really bright stars, no light pollution here, until your guide comes to inform you that " turtle Comes". Then you tip toe off across the sand to watch a huge turtle digging her hole in the sand, laying her eggs and then slowly making her way back into the sea. Pure magic.

Thats a brief sketch.. I've been to Lanka plenty of times and allways find new places that fascinate me. I'll keep going back and I know every trip I'm gonna find something new.

Rod.

Hi,

For trips from The Dolphin make sure you check out the beach boys, they are really friendly and not pushy at all. They will organise trips to suit your needs and they are so much more personal than going with the hotel reps. Look for Ravi on the beach, he is normally based at Tescos, he does a fantastic boat trip for as little as 500 rupees, you get to see some great wildlife, he will take you in the villages, climb the coconut palms and make you a refreshing drink., it's really worth it. We also did a two day overnight trip to Kandy, visiting Tea plantation, Pineapple gardens, Herb Gardens, Kandy Temple of theTooth, Kandy Dancers, Elephant Orphanage, Elephant ride, washing. Next day Dumbullah caves, Sigirya Rock. Evening meal and breakfast incuded, staying in a three star hotel. All for £60 each. This was organised by Tamell at Asda. Our driver and guide were brilliant, really informative and attentive. Be prepared to tip them and nearly everyone you meet!!!

You will love Sri Lanka, the people are so friendly and welcoming.

Have a great trip.

Lauren
