Safari Trips In Sri Lanka From Club Hotel Dolphin

We are staying at The Dolphin end of August till mid Sept can anyone advise us on a Safari Trip we could do and what animals we may see. Length of time for travel there by either Road/Plane.

Maybe a 2/3 day trip and costs.

Thanks.

Hi there SQ,

Closest and probably best is Minneriya (near Habarana). Is 4 hours by road and takes an overnight, as the safaris are dusk or dawn.

Cost:

* Transport 150 km is around Rs 10,000 for back and forth

* Safari (jeep, entrance) is around USD 50-60 for 2 adults

* Hotel/guesthouse at Habarana: depends on your likings, somewhere between Rs 3000-5000? Note that for cheap guesthouses often there is no driver's quarter and that would take away the cost savings there (extra room/meal to be paid for driver).

Minneriya is famous for big herds of jumbos, with calves in almost all seasons. Also deer, crocs and some other bigger animals.

For even more varied wildlife, including chances for sloth bears and leopard, Yala could do. But it's 8 hours by car and probably closed in September. Udu Walawe (7 hours by car) only has some small chances for leopard as an extra. So in your situation, Minneriya seems best.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Hi,

Yes Minneriya is the best from the place where you stay becuase less travelling etc. Also this season is the period to see biggest herds of wild elephants in Kaudulla & Minneriya parks. Alos some bird watching is possible.
