Fishing at Sunset Beach

This summer the entire family (Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and 10 Grand kids) is travelling to sunset beach for some fun in the sun.

Grandpa is an avid fisherman and is worried that he will have nothing to do. Is the fishing good at Sunset Beach? Are there charter opportunities? Are there any fishing hot spots?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sunset beach is great, but the fishing isn't the best. You will probably have better luck going finding a charter out of Myrtle or Wilmington as Sunset isn't too commercialized yet. Maybe Ocean Isle.

Calabash, NC is right down the road and few miles south is Little River, SC you will find charter fishing boats at those location. Sunset Beach is mainly beach houses and you are there for the beach, with one way on and off the island, the swing bridge. I am sure you know that, but I thought I would point out. In the summer I believe the bridge opens every 45 mins to hour, meaning you will have 10 or 15 mins (or more) where the bridge is open and you can not get on or off the island. This allows the boat traffic on the Intracoastal Waterway to pass.

we travel to Sunset every year ( 25 years now). Large number of us together( sometimes as many as 20) We have found that early morning and late evening are the best time to go off the pier, regardless of tides. Fishing the incoming tides are good. 1 1/2 hours before and after high. We also do good surf fishing early morning and late evening. You can usually fish till about 9:30 or 10:00 before the Beach goers come out. Most weekdays you can get back out around 5:00 after the majority of Beach people go out for dinner. Around the pier area is more crowded than the rest of the island should you try to surf fish, due to the public parking area. Calabash and Little River both have charter boats. We have seen days that our people come back with more fish than they can carry and we have also seen days that they come back with nothing. 1/2 day charters spend a large amount of time going out and coming in, not a lot of fishing time. Pier is $6.00 per pole. There are some size limits on certain fish, you can get this paper at the pier.
