We are spending 9 days on Milos and would love to cycle around parts of the Island.

We are fairly fit so hope this will be possible.

Any ideas as to how much a bicycle would cost for a few days ?

or would a scooter be better?

We rented mountain bikes from Easy Moto in September 2007 for €4 each (per day).

When are you going to Milos?

Thanks

I expect it might be oa little more now.

We will be on Milos the snd of May.

I suppose for 9 days we could do a bit of bargaining to for a good price.

You might be able to bargain a better price if you're planning to rent for the full nine days. Two different bike rental shops on Naxos offered us better rates for rentals longer than one day; places on Milos might do the same.

Unfortunately, we had no success trying to bargain our rental fee any lower -- and that was at the end of the season when the bikes were in terrible condition! We also had to oil, clean and adjust the bikes ourselves because the rental office staff refused to do it. (We basically were told "take them or leave them," but since we were desperate to do some cycling, they agreed to give us oil and tools if we fixed the bikes on our own. It would have been impossible to ride them without the work; as it was, they required too much effort to pedal so we kept them only one day.)

Fortunately, you're travelling early in the season so the rental bikes should be in good condition. In Sept 07 we found only two places in Adamas that had bikes for rent. One shop had three bikes; however, the tires were flat on two of them and the brakes were broken on the third. At the Easy Moto, all but two of the bikes were unusable, either because of flat tires, broken brakes or other mechanical problems. Staff at both shops told us the bikes were in poor condition because they had suffered a full summer of use and abuse. Since bike parts aren't readily available in Milos, they said, the bikes are shipped to Athens for repairs after the tourist season ends in the fall, and brought back in perfect condition for the start of the spring season. It was just our bad luck we wanted to rent bikes at the end of the season! Nevertheless, I recommend you check bikes carefully to ensure the brakes work and that the chains are properly oiled before you rent them.

We had a good time touring parts of the island on the bikes, but would have enjoyed ourselves much more if the bikes had been in better condition. I hope you have a better cycling experience than we did!

I bicycle practically everywhere in Milos, and can vouch that the island is indeed very "cyclable". Of course, I keep my own bike in Milos at al times.

:)

Easy Moto in Adamas is one of the few places that rent out bikes in Milos. Donnyb gave a good run down of the situation. It is amazing how much abuse a bicycle can take during just two tourist seasons. When I had a couple rented on behalf of friends, they were new and in mint condition.

€4/day is an excellent price. I would not insult the owners by trying to bargain further.

You'll have a lot of fun bicycling in Milos.

thanks for the all the information.

regerding checking brakes and tyres, we usually give any bikes we hire a thorough check over before we pay.

Yes I agree e4/5 a day sounds very fair.

can't wait to get going
