biking and birding oak island area

We will be visiting Oak Island for the 1st time several days in late Nov. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to do some birdwatching, and is traffic low enough to enjoy biking then? Are there any bike trails? Is the beach surface firm enough for biking? We have Mountain bikes. Thanks for any help, Linda

Think we might have missed this person's visit to Oak Island, NC, but here's a brief answer to the questions of the blog in case anyone else is interested in coming here.

This is a great place! You can get a little virtual-visit by looking at the web site www.rentalsatthebeach.com and then explore the various drop-down menus. Lots of information here, too, in sub-sections.

Anyway, as far as bike rentals, the island has possibilities, depending on whether you come in high season or other. The young fellow who owns the shop called SUBURBAN CYCLES on East Oak Island Drive can tell you everything you need, and if he doesn't carry it or offer it or do it, he can tell you who can. Check him out at www.suburbancycles.com. In summer there's a cycle rental on East Beach Drive, too.

As for bird watching, THIS IS the place because the island is a pass-through for many, many migrating species. I just learned that there are 4 types of hummingbirds, for instance, that will over-winter here, and we have so many other kinds of birds depending on the season. Robins by the thousands recently drifted through here on their way south. Ibis, a bird native to the area, have moved inland from their summer feeding places, and we see them moving in droves across the lush green fairways and lawns as they hunt for grubs during the winter.

You asked where to go birding around here? My gosh, you have but to stand still and wait, but some of the other great places for sighting fabulous passing birds is in the Green Swamp (not as murky as it sounds), along the canals and waterways, and in high-food areas such as places with lots of seeds and fruit (pyracantha berries, for instance).

The list of bird sightings is huge, but (and to name only a few), you can expect to see different types of geese, swans, bob whites, loons, mergansers, boobies, pelicans, frigatebirds, herons, egrets, storks, vultures, hawks, kestrels, rails, owls, martins, wrens, and on and on. By shifting from water to land, one can broaden the field to all kinds of birds.

Also, consider going to nature museums such as the Fort Fisher Aquarium which also boasts an outdoor display of marshland areas with wild, living displays.

Do come and see! Worth it!
