Best Tours for Kids in Emerald Isle Area

We are headed to EI for the first time at the beginning of Aug. with lots of kids under the age of 10. What are the best tours or general things to do with small kids other than the beach? Thanks!

A visit to Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium is a great option for kids. The aquarium offers several live-animal touch pool and "living shipwreck" exhibits as well as family-oriented programs, e.g., "Pirate Family Night", "Toothy Tuesday", etc.

It's been a number of years since I last went to the aquarium, but I can attest it's interesting for adults as well.

We went on the Lookout Cruise (catamaran) last summer. They offer a Dolphin Cruise and Sunset Cruise. We had kids 5 and 6. They loved it!! The tour is in Beaufort. It's about a 30 min. drive. Another boat offers a trip to Shackeford Island (horses) and shelling. We will do that 1 this year.

Shackleford Island is beautiful. The tour boats generally drop you off at the end of the island, unless you make other arrangements. Bring a beach umbrella, plenty of water and some snacks if you decide to stay there for any time at all! The shelling is nice for kids--nothing to write home about for adults. There is also a nice shallow area for kids to splash around near where the boats let you off--keep the kids away from the areas with steep drop-offs. The horses are quite a hike from the end of the island, so keep that in mind.

There are several area websites that can help you. CrystalCoastNC.org has a good overview of things to do, telephone numbers, has a calendar for each month. TourBeaufort.com is another. I'm sure Morehead probably has one also. This is one of those areas where you can do as much or as little as you want. Mac Daddy's in Cape Carteret has bowling, an arcade, etc for children also.
