Traffic?

Our family is traveling from Md, Sunday July 3rd. Our check-in is at 3 pm.

Ive read a few horror stories on traffic coming into Corolla.

What is the best time to arrive to avoid traffic?

Is it as bad as Im reading?

Worse. Last year part of our group left Maryland at 5:30 am and they got to the house in 6.5 hours. We left at 5:45 and it took us over NINE hours. We have been going down for about 15 years and we still haven't found the exact timing. Once you get over the bridge there is a back way up to the Duck area which if there is traffic could save you 1.5-2 or 3 hours. But then you still have to get 10 miles or so above that.

Keep in mind that the entire beach is trying to check in at 3-4 pm. The traffic on Sundays is typically a little lighter than Saturday BUT it can still back up. To avoid the back up, it's usually best to cross the bridge into Kitty Hawk by 12-1 pm and head to Corolla then. There are plenty of shops to explore or restaurants for lunch while you're waiting for your rental home to be ready. Before we moved here, we used to spend the night before around Richmond or the Hampton Roads area so that we would only need to drive 2-3 hours on the day of check in. And if you do get stuck in traffic, I guarantee it's so much nicer than any I95 back up!

Sundays are nowhere near as bad as Saturday - if you can cross the bridge by noon, you shouldn't have too much trouble at all.

The rental office is in Kitty Hawk.

Is this before or after the bridge?

Thank you everyone for your help! We are traveling with lots of kids and a dog. The less traffic the better!

The office is in Kitty Hawk and your renting in Corolla. You usually cant get your key till the place is ready. You dont want to have to drive up to Corolla at 3:00 in the afternoon even on a Sunday. If you get over the bridge before noon, you better make some arrangements with the rental office.

Or plan other activities between noon and 3 p.m. Some ideas: get lunch somewhere, go shopping (check out Kitty Hawk kites), play putt-putt, climb Jockey's Ridge, go to the beach. I know there are a few areas of public beach access with parking & restroom facilities between Kitty Hawk and Nag's Head.

Lots of rentals now have keyless entry. Check with the rental company to see if yours has this feature. If it does, then you can head directly to Corolla and wait for them to call you to tell you the rental is ready. Then they can give you the code over the phone and you won't have to go to the office to check in. Not sure all rental companies will do this, but Village Realty does.

Kitty Hawk is after the bridge. Good luck and enjoy your visit. On future visits to OBX, remember that Sunday is much better than Saturday and Saturday demands a VERY early trip is you are coming down 95 or I-64.
