I think the Comfort Inn in Matthews is probably a good choice, not right at the speedway by any means, but for the huge draw the race brings, it's good. Probably a 20-30 minute drive on a regular day, I'm sure you'll need to add good amount of additional time for race weekend. I can't remember the last time I was in town Memorial DAy weekend, I always head to the beach, much fewer crowds than in and around Charlotte that weekend.

My brother and nephew are huge Dale Jr. fans, also, and were crazy about his dad too. My nephew is now in his early 20' s but when he was little, his bedroom was all Dale Earnhardt Sr. . I guess you know you can tour some teams' race shops http://www.racecityusa.org/racing/ and there's the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown Charlotte http://www.nascarhall.com/ For race weekend there's a street festival called Speed Street, this year's info isn't up yet but keep checking.. https://www.facebook.com/foodlionspeedstreet http://600festival.com/speed-street

Outside of racing things...

-Over close to the Speedway is Concord Mills http://www.simon.com/mall/concord-mills , yes shopping, but so much more, all the men in my family love the huge Bass Pro Shop World there. basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPage… Lots of restaurants around, and a new aquarium- www.visitsealife.com/charlotte-concord/

-The U.S. White water Center https://usnwc.org/ offers all types of outdoor activities..white-water rafting, kayaking, rock wall climbing, ropes courses, mountain biking, zipline, etc.

-Carowinds Amusement Park- tons of roller coasters, and a huge waterpark https://www.carowinds.com/

Always crowded on weekends, it's been a few years since we had season passes but we found that arriving early Sunday mornings was a good time.

Food- there's a good number of decently priced chain restaurants near your hotel. A old-time diner-type local favorite, South 21 has a Matthews location nearby http://www.south21matthews.net/ and the original South 21 Drive-In which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, is not too far away on hwy 74 toward Charlotte tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g49022-d51… Another budget friendly, good-eatin' locally-owned restaurant in Matthews.. http://www.theamericanarestaurant.com/ My parents eat there several times a week.

Hope this helps.

Have a great time, and Go Junior! :)

Awesome! THank you so much! Just what I was looking for! Glad to hear that the hotel is a good choice. Yes, being that far away is fine, I would rather not deal with being too close anyway, lots of crazys sometimes!! :) Any other suggestions for out of the way "Fun" kids places. I"m thinking my 9 year old would love to do something non-race related. I jsut don't think we would have time for Carolwinds. I saw Wolflodge or WolfDen, somethign like that, is that fun/worth it? Wasn't there a safari or something too?? What about go kart racing? is there one place that is better than another? The fam would love that. Also, one last question, Whisky River, is that suitable for a family dinner? I thougth I read somewhere that you had to get somethign in order to drink in the city? I maybe totally off my rocker, but I thougth that was somethign I read at some point. Again, thanks for al the help!!

I think you are referring to Great Wolf Lodge? It's a hotel/resort in Concord and I believe it's waterpark is only for it's guests.. http://www.greatwolf.com/concord/waterpark

The NC Transportation Museum is about an hour from Charlotte, kids love it, especially boys.. www.nchistoricsites.org/spencer/spencer.htm http://www.nctrans.org/

As for a safari, either http://www.lazy5ranch.com/ or http://www.hollywild.com/visit.html

We've also got a very nice Zoo, about 1.5 hours away.. http://www.nczoo.org/

and a Raptor center nearby..http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/

Go karts- my nephew has talked about going here... http://www.meetatthepit.com/about-us.html

and here is an Family Amusement center near Matthews.. adventurelanding.com/parks/… Go karts, putt-putt, arcade, bumper cars, etc. We haven't been in a few years, but used to enjoy it.

As for Whiskey River, I've never been but from what I've been told it's more of a bar/night-club.

I think you might have read something about the arm band you need in order to purchase alcohol at Speed Street. There should be info on that on the Speed Street link in my 1st reply.

Best Wishes.

Your hotel is 30 minutes away in normal traffic. You may be looking at a couple hours on race day. Remember, the Speedway is not in Charlotte, it's in Concord. Not sure there is much availability now in Concord, but may want to consider it. Dale Jr's HQ is in Mooresville....they have tours a couple days a week. Hendrick Motorsports is in Concord, about a mile from the Speedway....great tours, shops, etc. Also may want to consider the NASCAR Hall of Fame (which is in downtown Charlotte). Race traffic is bad, but nothing like it was years ago (but sure it will pick up now that Jr. is having a great year).

For a 9 year old, not race related? Agree, the Zoo in Asheboro is great. It's a good hour plus from Concord, so a full day. Great Wolfe Lodge is for guests only and I'm sure it's beyond sold out now.

I'm sure you've done your homework and know where the hotel is in relation to the speedway, but after reading the last comment I wanted to add a map just for reassurance. http://tinyurl.com/kvd48c4 It's pretty much a direct route from Matthews to the speedway via I-485. Over my years here on TA, I've talked to people coming for the race who've felt they were lucky to find hotel rooms in Rock Hill, SC, Gastonia, Statesville, Salisbury, and/or Lexington, NC, all much further away than Matthews. If you were coming to see the speedway, race shops, etc. when there wasn't a big race in town, I'd say you could do better being closer, but being that it's the biggest race weekend of the year, you've done a good job, and have a good hotel in a good location, away from the 24/7 craziness.

Have fun! :)

Didn't have time to read all the posts so excuse if repeating. There;s a new aquarium at Concord Mills near the speedway. Your youngest (and others!) might enjoy that.

Out of curiousity, I checked Hotels.com....surprisingly, there is availability in Concord, though I am sure it's priced up compaired to Matthews. Even more suprisingly, Great Wolf Lodge is has availability for a family of 4. It's not cheap, but it is a lot of fun....starts at about $252 per night, with a lot of fun amenities for kids (indoor/outdoor water park, bowling, Magiquest, etc....). Have a great trip.

Inner Peaks is the climbing center if he/you would like to try some indoor climbing center

There is also Sky High which is one of those huge trampoline places

If you felt like bringing your bikes there are lots of greenway trails in Charlotte.
