Road trip with starting point - Charlotte

Good day, all!

My family (2 adults, one 12-yr old) is planning a summer trip. We will be flying directly into/from Charlotte NC and plan to spend 2 weeks in the area.

Thinking about a road trip, can you please give us suggestions? We like mountains, nature (but also good restaurants and nice hotels).

So lakes, parks, attractions (not necessarily Nascar nor museums).

Looking forward to your responses!

I don't think it makes much difference between Boone and Blowing Rock, myself, Isa. We like both towns. Downtown Boone in the King St area is nice and walkable to lots of restaurants and shops. They're both good bases for exploring the surrounding area. Be sure to go to Valle Crucis to the old original Mast General Store. There's one in downtown Boone, too, but it's not the historic site that the one in Valle Crucis is.

If hotels are sold out, try to rearrange your visits. Start in another place and go in another direction.

Cannot imagine that all is sold out, this far in advance. What are you looking for?

I think she's okay queeni. She has accommodations in Boone instead of Blowing Rock. Not a big deal in my book.

I'm also surprised that any hotels in Blowing Rock are sold out this far in advance. Maybe she's there around July 4th.

We like Boone too, but it is much larger (a university town) and more commercial in areas than Blowing Rock. And while downtown is cool, there is no where to stay close to downtown. As a base though, it's fine.

Isa--we were just on your island last month on vacation! Beautiful place!!! Loved, loved, loved the oh-so-famous swinging bridge!!! Aren't you on Cruise Critic? If that is you, you were so much help on the Curacao board! You offer so much good info for your island!!

I think everyone has given you great advice! I will say that I live in Winston-Salem, but I don't think it's worth you driving over here from the mountains just to see Old Salem. It only takes a couple of hours to go through there and is nowhere near as big as the sights in Williamsburg, VA. I would stay in the mountain area and then head back to Charlotte. Other than Old Salem, we don't have anything else here in Winston-Salem to see. However, if you do decide to stop by here, message me! Hubby & I would love to meet up with you somewhere and have coffee or even grab some dinner. We have some great restaurants here in Winston.
