Charlotte after Christmas....with kids

Hi,

We are going to be in Charlotte for 2 night/3 day (dec 27, 28) staying downtown at the Hyatt House. We have 3 young boys (ages 9, 7 and 5). Looking for some fun things to do with them to get a taste of Charlotte and also celebrating the holidays.

I saw the ice skating options which look fun. Also saw Discover Place reviews. What else could we consider doing?

Thank you! Carol

Discovery Place is great for kids that age and fun for adults, too. You could check out the Nature Museum, too.

Hello and Welcome! Here is a good link to various attractions in the Charlotte area. It honestly depends on what your kids are interested in and if you'll have a vehicle.

There are a few things not on this list that your kids may like:

http://www.thespeedpark.com/ Speedpark at Concord Mills (also has ice skating)

http://cha.jumpskyhigh.com/ - Trampoline center in Pineville, NC (about 15-20 miles from where you are staying)

http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/ One of my favorite spots, a rehab center for Birds of Prey

Have fun!

If you have a car, and are willing to brave the traffic, driving over to McAdenville (about 20 min. from uptown Charlotte) one evening would be fun. It is knkow as "Christmas Town USA" because of the lights!!!

Or visit the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens (they are 'dressed up' for the holidays, too)

After Discovery Place, your kids will find the Nature Museum pretty lacking. It hasn't changed much since I went as a kid 30 years ago.

The Children's Theater of Charlotte is doing a version of A Christmas Carol downtown that seems to be very popular. Ticket's still available for the dates you'll be here:

The Nature Museum is pretty outdated, but kids don't always notice stuff like that. Depends on what they're used to. My kids enjoyed it when they were little even though we regularly go to the NC Museum of Life and Science which integrates the kinds of exhibits at Discovery Place (often they both have the same rotating exhibits) with extensive outdoor exhibits including animal habitats. So although my kids were used to a whole butterfly house, the butterfly atrium at the Nature Museum was still interesting to them because they were young and it was something different. I think they'd still be interested it in at 10 and 12, but if you only have time for one then definitely pick Discovery Place.

Hi! We went to the speedway which was super fun although the kids were exhausted and kinda tired of being in car after a long drive.

We found a local pizza place and the pep rally for the Belk bowl game the following day. Lots of fun. Kids were dancig with all the college students :)

After a good sleep we went to see A Christmas Story at the Children's Theater. We were a little early so we hung out for story time. Terrific venue and my boys were belly laughing through the performance. Would highly recommend seeing a play here. They handled the ghost story lines very well considering they had a room full of kids.

Next stop was Discovery Place. Wow. We spent 4 hours in there and had to drag the kids out. Great exhibits....good flow to the museum and healthy food in cafeteria. I have been to many kids museums and this one is up there with Please Touch in Philly as my favourite.

Dinner at Merts followed by earlier night and we were on the road the next morning. It was a great few days in Charlotte! Will definitely be back! Thanks again for he recommendations. Wish we had had more time there.
