A few hours in Charlotte

We are driving from northern Virginia to Atlanta and will stay overnight at the Hilton Garden Inn on Ayrsley Town Blvd. in Charlotte. We will have a few hours in the afternoon (if we leave early enough) and a few hours the next morning to do some sightseeing in Charlotte before going on to Atlanta. Can you recommend a few things that we would be able to do in that timeframe? We enjoy museums and areas with unique stores and art galleries. Also, a nice restaurant for dinner? Thanks for any help.

You'll be back-tracking a bit to go into Charlotte for the art galleries there, but we have a few....The Bechtler, modern art...http://www.bechtler.org/; The Mint Museum, different collections..http://www.mintmuseum.org/ are both worthwhile and beside each other....about a 15 minute drive back in to Uptown Charlotte from Ayrsley. There are also a number of other galleries and museums in Uptown Charlotte.

Billy Graham's Library is near Ayrsley....http://www.billygrahamlibrary.org/

Another gem in the surrounding area....Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens..http://www.dsbg.org/

Can't think off hand of any very nice restaurants close to Ayrsley.(there are several restaurants in Ayrsley, I'm not familiar with them..& not sure any would pass for "nice") For something quite good and different, we like A piece of Havana, Cuban restaurant not too far from Ayrsley .....http://www.apieceofhavana.com/index.html

just reread your topic...you could visit Uptown Charlotte art galleries on the afternoon of your drive to Charlotte, so not to back-track. The Bechtler closes at 5pm, and most days the Mint Museum closes at 6pm. There are plenty of nice restaurants in/near Uptown...we are fortunate to have Johnson and Wales Culinary arts campus in Charlotte which has greatly improved the quality of dining in Charlotte. www.charlottesgotalot.com/default.asp…

There's a pretty good Indian restaurant at Ayersley...I concur with the Billy Graham Library - close by and free. I am a member of Daniel Stowe Garden and love it... but to be honest, right now is not the best time visit. The storms in Belmont wreaked havoc and the garden looks pretty rough- leaves stripped off trees and plants and few flowers this year...I will say the new trails are nice and the Conservatory is OK...but worth the 12.00 fee? Probably not right now unless you just want a peaceful place to walk around.

I would suggest going uptown, parking and simply walking around. Ayersley is a straight shot up Tryon Rd. into uptown. There's lots of restaurants and the like. I would go to Discovery Place, a museum uptown, and maybe the nascar hall of fame, which is also uptown. Rock Bottom Brewery or Fox and Hound are good cheap food uptown.

Thank you so much for your recommendations. I looked up the museums and they seem to be just what we would want to see. And Uptown seems like it should be very interesting in itself and have some good restaurants. We will certainly take a look at the restaurants recommended. A 15-minute drive to get from our hotel to Uptown is nothing for someone coming from congested northern Virginia. I am now looking forward to our short stop in Charlotte on our way to Atlanta. TA, per usual, has given me just the information I need to have a great trip. Thanks.

Definitely do not miss Metalmorsphosis ( I think it's David Cerny's only sculpture in the US...most are in Prague... very contraversial personality but incredibly talented....)

actually not that far from your hotel.

There are at least 4 videos. Interestingly Metalmosphosis is directed by the artist's own computer from Prague, Czech Republic (David Cerny)

I just want to thank TA for your recommendations for our overnight stay in Charlotte. We didn't have time to do anything the day we got there but the next morning we went to The Bechtler and The Mint Museums. We had a delicious lunch at The Halcyon which is the restaurant in the Mint Museum. We enjoyed ourselves so much and there was so much to see that we stayed in Charlotte until late afternoon and didn't get to Atlanta until about 8:00 pm. We will definitely try to get to Charlotte again and spend more time.

By the way, for people coming down to Charlotte from our area - northern Virginia - we took Route 29 most of the way and it was a lovely ride. The day was beautiful, the scenery was great and there was little traffic. And I don't think it took any longer than coming by the freeways.

Thanks for the feedback, we are glad you enjoyed Charlotte... Good tip about Route 29, if you have time....I agree, very scenic; we sometimes take it (going the other way...)
