Rednecks or not - has it changed?

I have never been to Carolina Beach. I read in many of the posts that it had a somewhat unsavory reputation, but that was chaning. Myrtle Beach was a bit too "red" for us, however, we stayed in Surfside Beach, which was fine. I am traveling with my 78 year old mother in-law, my wife, my brother in-law and his wife, pluse two twleve year olds and an eight year old.

It looks like renting a house is more affordable on Carolina Beach than Ocean Isle for example and I am wondering why the price difference. Do you think we would enjoy Ocean Isle, or Topsail more?

It seems like there is lot to do from a historical standpoint and plenty to do in Wilmington.

Any suggestions before I book a place would be greatly appreciated.

Just got back on Saturday August 12th

No rednecks really. Nice friendly people, but very little to do at night. Kids over the age of 10 will have difficulty occuping their time after the beach. Water was rougfh at times , but the kids loved it. A quiet vacation , 17 hours away from home in Montereal Quebec

We stayed at Carolina Beach the last week of July 2006, the first time since 1996. The town is going through a building boom, with areas that were open country all the way to Kure Beach and over to the state park now solidly built up with tall, narrow 3-story condos. The old beech cottages that dominated the town 10 years ago are now up for sale, to be replaced by one of the new tall condos.

The new Courtyard by Marriott has done much to spruce up the boardwalk area, although it still keeps its rough charm. Other developments are being built near the boardwalk and the city park. Yet thankfully it appears enough of the older condos and motels will continue on to prevent Carolina Beach from becoming overrun by highrises, as happened at Myrtle Beach.

To the girl who made the comment about yankee's, I live in the south and have friends who were born and raised in the south and they use the term red neck....these are middle class and upper class southerners.....

I don't care for the term myself.....

Please don't judge all people from the north the same....

Maybe you have met rude northerners...I am sure that you have met rude southerners....

I have met rude people from the US and other counties...

I don't judge a whole group by a few bad experiences...

I am proud to be a yankee as I am sure you are proud to be from the south...but we live in the United States of America...

we should all get along....We are Americans first....

My husband and I visited Carolina Beach and it is run down...

The Marriott is a nice hotel....

If this was a beach area any place else I would be honest about the area.....

No matter who you are northerner or southerner there is no excuse for being dirty and sloppy....and making nice beach areas undesirable to visit...

I would not recommend Carolina Beach unless you just like to stay by the hotel and visit the other areas such as Southport by ferry....

The area is not very tidy...

It is not enjoyable to walk around....

Respectfully,

I couldn't disagree more. The high-rise Marriott takes away from the vintage vibe of the area. I love the old feel of the strip and the vintage motels and cottages. I stayed in an oceanfront home at the north end near the pier, and the beach was immaculate. The undeveloped area north of the pier was amazing.

Sure, there are no squeaky-clean chain restaurants or high-end bars with plasa televisions, and you will probably never see a Starbucks... but it's hard to beat a beer with the locals or a coffee and a bagel in a little hole-in-the-wall place.

In the end, as long as I love it, that's all that matters. I will continue to vacation there, as long as the high-rises and chains stay put in Myrtle.

gnodule, I couldn't AGREE more with you!! That is what my hubby and I love about Carolina Beach. Small, friendly, old-fashioned beach town. We too use to stay in a wonderful beach house at the north end...wasn't available this past summer so we stayed in a beautiful, luxurious condo down in Kure Beach (well, actually Ft. Fisher, but whatever) We went to some of the small "local" bars and had a blast, walked the pier at Kure Beach....It made me feel so good that Carolina Beach really hadn't changed too much after all these years. This was the first time we had been back in 6 years. LOVE IT!!

But..aren't they trying to build some super condo along the boardwalk area. Huge place looks like!!( Arvista or something like that.)
