Things to do in the Boone area?

My husband and I (early 60s) have an opportunity to visit our daughter in the Boone area the first week of May. She has asked what we would like to do but this is a hard question because we don't know much abour the area. Some things that we enjoy are birding, photography, wineries/craft breweries, farmers markets, festivals. Short easy hikes are OK, but strenuous hiking up mountains is probably not in the cards. Any ideas are welcome including short day trips.

Thank you,

There are many of those things in the Boone area. Not sure on the wineries because that's not an interest of mine, but lots of outdoor opportunities for birding and photography, farmer's markets, and frequent festivals (couldn't tell you specifically about the first week in May). Blowing Rock's monthly Art in the Park Festival starts in mid-May (http://www.blowingrock.com/artinthepark/).

Plenty of short easy hikes in the area, too. Check out Bass Lake at Moses Cone (completely flat walk on a graveled carriage trail around a small picturesque lake/pond) or many of the overlooks off the Blue Ridge Parkway have short walks.

You may run into App State's graduation depending on when you plan to be there. It's Mother's Day weekend, so you might want to plan to be in town before or after that.

Yep, you'll have no trouble finding things to do. Just a few more things to consider:

--Grandfather Mountain with its stunning views and mile-high bridge.

--The original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis (just minutes from Boone) is well worth a visit. A much better experience than the one in Boone.

--Linville Caverns is also a very worthwhile visit. It's maybe 45 minutes drive from Boone.

Google any of the above for more info and directions.

You can easily take a day trip to wineries - see www.ncwine.org for an interactive map and directions.

You've gotten good recommendations.

Here's a few more...the Watauga Farmers Market in Boone begins May 4th...fantastic. http://www.wataugacountyfarmersmarket.org/

Downtown Boone offers Art Crawl the first Friday of each month...May 3rd.. downtownboonenc.com/index.cfm/…

The Orchard at Altapass opens for the season the 1st of May. altapassorchard.org/…october Most days they have live music along with a dance floor for dancing! Hayrides, hikes, etc.

Other activities ... http://altapassorchard.org/what_to_do.shtml

This online event calendar for the area covers a lot of local events. http://toddscalendar.com/events/2013-05

Another good calendar of area events, plus things to do/see, accommodations, food/drinks, etc. exploreboonearea.com/CalendarofEvents/tabid/…

Appalachian State's Commencement ceremonies/events begin Friday, May 10 and continue through Sunday, May 12... not a good time to be in Boone, if not part of this.

I think you probably have already made your trip, but for future info or for anyone in the same situation, I thought I'd mention the Boone Fork Loop Trail (Julian Price Memorial Park) off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I love it.

I think short little blog does a great job describing what to expect. I love that it's a nice little walk, a little challenging, and a beautiful view of the lake.
