Close to Watkins Glen

Hi, we are 2 couples looking to stay close to Watkins Glen first weekend of August. We stayed last year at the Colonial Inn which was in our price range and great that we could walk to the gorge. Looking for something maybe a bit more modern. Have looked at Microtel in Seneca Falls and then driving to the gorge and touring the wineries. We are coming from Kingston, Ontario so not sure if we'd be better off in Seneca Falls or Ithaca area. Which would be better as far as driving distance to Watkins Glen, shopping, and hotel prices. The people we're going with have not been to the gorge at Watkins Glen so we'd like them to see it.

How about the Horseheads / Big Flats area? Lots of hotels and shopping and an easy drive to Watkins Glen.

Corning could be another option (21 miles south) - the Glass Museum there is worthwhile and there is a pleasant historic district (Market St) with shops and dining.

Of the two places you have listed, Ithaca may be a better bet. They're about the same distance from Watkins Glen, but there are more hotel options in Ithaca, more restaurants, and if Watkins Glen is your thing, you'll find three more parks in the immediate area that are equally stunning.

One potential problem with hotels in the Horseheads/Elmira/Corning area: the booming fracking business in Northern PA has caused a shortage of hotel space for all the southern workers, so they spill over onto the NY side of the border. This drives up prices and lowers availabiltiy. Something I noticed last time I was in the area.

Personally, I love some of the old houses in places like Trumansburg which have been made into B&Bs.
