Leopards and Lions in QENP: where to stay and where to go?

Hi,

I am planning for my honeymoon and the highlight of the trip will be gorilla tracking; yet, we would like to do some game drives in QENP as well, looking for lions and leopards. We'll be in the area around mid June, and we'd like to know whether that is a good time of the year to visit the park. Also, we'd like to know where to stay to maximiza our chances to see the above-mentioned animals.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Lions are frequently seen in both sectors of QENP. Ishasha sometimes has them up in trees. Mweya area has plenty lions too as does Kaseni flats.

Leopards are there in abundance but rarely seen in daylight.

DO lodges offer night drives to spot leopards? Also, is June a good season to visit?

June is fine.

Some Lodges will do Night drives, Semuliki do but National parks are not too keen.

I should enquire at the time of booking.

Roberto

Hello - check out Mihingo Lodge on Facebook, they report night drives and leopard sightings with increasing regularity. But nothing is definite here; I have never seen one in the wild in Uganda, but have seen lions on every trip.

Nice jackal photo on ML page too... that's a lucky sighting!

That's in Lake Mburo by the way, on the way to QE. Sorry, forgot to mention that.

And "every trip to various parks," some are much easier to find that others!

In case you fail to see them, there is an extra fee you pay to UWA to help in tracking them

Yes that sometimes works. But not always. We tried a night drive with a UWA guide at Mburo, came back at midnight, exhausted only having seen a few disgruntled zebra, a few buffalo and some warthogs.

And our night drive in Kidepo with a UWA ranger was a complete waste of time - low season - shouldn't have even been taken out. You learn!!

Lions in Queen Elizabeth are mainly found in Kasenyi area and Ishasha - regardless of where you stay, your game drives will happen in Kasenyi therefore increasing chances of Lion sightings. at an extra cost you pay for lion research where they get to track them giving better chances.
