Buying Rupees on arrival in Mauritius

Hi we are going to Le Tousserok in the middle of October and it's the first time to Mauritius for us. I have been reading all the questions/answers on the forum and wanted to ask about the advice on buying Rupees on arrival at the airport.

Our local currency exchange shop said that they have been told that the Euro seems to be very well accepted when purchasing Mauritian Rupees, and gives a better rate than with the English pound. Has anyone experienced this at all please?

Thanks, Debbie

The answer is no. In fact if they give basic advice that is duff, I cannot contemplate what would happen if you had asked a difficult question.

The exchange bureaus go on the prevailing currency rates. This is linked to the international money markets. You get the exchange rate on the day. There is no favouritism towards the Euro.

Everytime you exchange currency, there is a little bit of the pie that goes towards the Bureau de exchange. This is their profit. If you exchange £ to Euros and then Euros to Rupees then thats two slices of pie you have given them.

Have a look at the xe.com. They have a currency exchange tool, although there rates are money market rates and not the lower tourist rates, ylou can track how well currencies do and check the rates against your local currency shop.

I agree with Preston and dont think of buying euros.Rupees are used everywhere here.Exchange some at the airport and then use your card when needed, Atms are everywhere and you will get a much better exchange rate here than in uk.
