Toronto bypassing Syracuse where to stay

Hi folks,

Driving from Toronto to Massachusets and since Syracuse is about the midpoint, we've thought of stopping in Syracuse. No offense intended to those who live there, two friends warned me that the town can get a little "sketchy." We just want a safe, affordable, (3.5 to 4 stars with discount) clean (no bed bugs!) hotel to stay in along the highway 90 so we can continue on our merry way!

Any suggestions?

The town is not sketchy in any areas where you would probably stay. The south side is definitely to be avoided but otherwise you should be fine. The Carrier Circle area has good lodging and dining choices as does Liverpool, both are right off I-90 (and not near the south side).

Outside of that, if you are looking to stay in the proximity of I-90 and desire a town of any size with lots of lodging choices, you would have to continue another hour or so west to Waterloo or Geneva. If you like to gamble, Turning Stone has a casino and a variety of lodging and dining choices 40 minutes east of Syracuse. There are probably other non-Turning Stone offerings in that area as well.
