Flying to Albany -- where else to go beyond Saratoga?

We are flying to Albany August 12 and leave the 16th. We would like to spend 2 days at the races and would love suggestions on excursions beyond Saratoga.

I have never been to this part of the NE so have zero clue on what is too far to travel. We enjoy town hopping so would like to use our first day to head as far North and then journey down ending in Saratoga.

Any suggestions? THANKS!

There was a recent post titled "Things to do in Albany" I replied with some ideas including western Massachusetts. This would be about 1 hour from Saratoga. I will bump it up to help you find it.

Manchester vermont is about 1 hour away from Saratoga. It is a very nice drive and there are alot of stores(outlets) there. Along the way you can go tubing or canoeing on the Battenkill. Lake George is 1/2 hour North. The lake itself is beautiful and worth a boat ride. The main street is mainly tourist shops. You can be in Montreal in about 3-31/2 hours for a day trip to do something different. There are alot of regional theaters in Massachusetts that are all relatively close.

if you are going to the races i'm assuming you're adults...Lake George is a nice little town. It has nearby shopping outlets and also amusement parks if you are into them. Waterworld is a water only park (including wave pool). Great Escape is a park for all ages -includes water rides, and Magic Forest is for the little kids. There are also many miniature golf sites.

Into history?? Lake George also includes the Fort William Henry. Up north a little further in Fort Ticondaroga (sp?). Or head south of Albany to Hyde Park, home of Franklin Roosevelt, also wife Elenor Roosevelt wo had a seperate home, home of Vanderbuilt estate. These homes plus more all have nice grounds and 2 of them go down to the Hudson River.. It's free to get into the grounds for most if not all of these but a small fee to tour the houseLots more history in area too.

into hiking..visit Asable Chasm (past Lake George), walk and boat ride thru awesome gorges.

look into parts of vermont...the Teddy Bear Factory is across the NY border.

You can ride thru a lock in Schuylerville which is about 15 minutes away. Right down the road is the battlefield and museum from Revolutionary war.

Lake Placid (site of the 1980 winter olympics) is less than 2 hours north of Saratoga. Lots to do in and around, especially if you like the outdoors. Lots of good restuarants also. Can also take Gondola ride to top of Whiteface Mountain Ski resort (10 minutes from lake Placid). View is AMAZING on a clear day.
