Is it possible to take a ferry from NYC to Rochester? If so, will it be faster than taking Amtrek? Thanks
No, it is not. You are best to rent a car and drive yourself. If that isn't possible, you can take a train (Amtrak), or bus or you can fly there. But definitely, no boats.
NYC to Rochester is a land based journey, in order to take a ferry, you'd have to go up around New England and then into the St Lawrence Sea Way...I think. I don't even think there is any service out there that does that.
As the previous poster mentioned, you can drive (don't take a taxi!) http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=New+York+City,+NY&daddr=Rochester,+NY&hl=en&geocode=FXFAbQIdK8KW-yk7CD_TpU_CiTFi_nfhBo8LyA%3BFcaVkgIdVsBf-ylTsxSWBbPWiTEe5iVB_B8AWg&mra=ls&sll=40.714353,-74.005973&sspn=1.070063,2.705383&ie=UTF8&z=7 There are buses that run this route.
Or you can Fly, Jet Blue runs daily & frequent flights from NYC's JFK airport to Rochester (airport code=ROC.) Occasionally they run specials for $39 one-way.
Amtrak is the next best option.
Hope that helps.
In that case Amtrek would be the likely option.
Amtrak or bus should be fine. You actually can get her by boat on the Hudson River and the Erie Canal, but there is no commerical boat service on the Canal that I am aware of. Have fun!
