Can't Decide Where to Stay in Oia- 6 Girls

Hi,

We are six girls travelling to Oia for 3 or 4 nights the end of July.

We cannot really spend more that 50/60 Euros per person per night and the top knotch places seem out of range. At the same time, we dont want to compromise on the view.

Any suggestions?

Also, if we do not get a hotel with a perfect view are there places in Oia to go and chill out and watch the perfect sunset and see the volcano and white houses as the sun turns them all red?

The northwest end of Oia is perfect for watching the sunset. The village is small, so you can walk there easily from wherever you're staying.

If you are willing to forego the caldera or sunset view you can get cheap studios with kitchens from the Musses Studios. There is a lovely sea view from the upper units, just not of the caldera.

Also check the Anemomilos Hotel in Oia.

Most of the visitors just find a spot to watch the sunset. you don’t have to find a hotel room to watch it. Just find a porch or go to the restored castle, don’t expect too much of a castle.( If you’ve seen tomb raider with Angelina Jolie it’s the opening scene with the Greek wedding) or go to the restaurant called Kastro. The sunset is not over the Caldera, it’s at the northern tip of the island. The best sunset I have seen in Santorini was in Fira, there are some spots where you can get to see the sun set right in the sea between Santorini and Thirasia. I don’t remember what time of the year it was, since the sun doesn’t always set in the same place, but I think it was from the balcony of a place called Ketty apartments.

Hi Hippy, what do you mean by that? I saw photos of ether studios and some seemed to make it appear that it was a bit deserted. But I love the fact that it has a nice pool that overlooks the ocean and from what I understand a great view of sunset. For me, better location means perfect sunset. Caldera View is a plus. I have been reading some of brotherlee's comments and it seems that many hotels do not have a perfect view of sunset- even some of the very expensive ones. VIP Suites gave me a reasonable price at about 60 a night per girl for their 2 bedroom apt. Do they have an unobstructed view of sunset? facing setting of sun? I read some reviews from people who stayed there and many complained about poor rooms. Well, we dont care so much but we would like decent pool. Do they have nice pool?Thank you brotherlee. How did you get so attached to Santorini? Just Curious. Timothy: Thanks a lot about explaining that there are places to go and view the sunset and caldera even if we don't get a perfect view from our hotel. Oia's Sunset Hotel Apartments also gave me a very good price! Do you suggest those over Ether Studios?

The VIP Suites have NO sunset view whatsoever, they actually face away from the sunset on the east side of a ridge so that the sunset is completely blocked from view. But if you want to watch the sunset all you'll have to do is walk up to the top of the VIP property and face west. What they do have is an excellent caldera view, and from your balcony you'll be able to watch the villages change colors as the colors in the sky reflect off the buildings, and then at night you'll be able to see all the twinkling lights of the four cliffside villages. If you happen to be there to watch the moon rise over the far end of the island it'll be something you'll never forget. Also, there is NO pool at the VIP Suites.

The reason the Oia's Sunset Hotel Apartments are so cheap is because their location isn't what their website would like you to believe. It's sort of shoehorned in between some other buildings away from the caldera. It looks out towards the far shore in the opposite direction from the caldera. This can be a good view, but if you look at the 360' view "surround video" you can see that you'll be looking out over a lot of unattractive rooftops, and only then if you're in that particular apartment on the top floor that was used to shoot the video. The rest of the rooms have no real view at all that I'm aware of except for maybe from the far end of the pool deck and from the ground floor. If it's between the Oia's Sunset and the Ether Studios, for my money Ether wins hands-down.

My connection to Santorini, and specifically Oia, goes back to 1985 when I arrived for the first time. I ended up staying for 6 months and returned in 1987 for another 6 months. Over the years since I've returned several times for 4 weeks at a stretch. For me there's something magical about it that goes beyond my ability to express in words, but if there's any truth to the idea of reincarnation I know I lived there a very long time ago. When I arrive now it's like coming home, and once I'm there I feel like I've never left.

Thanks for the tips!!

That is really cool Brotherlee about falling in love with Santorini. It is a magical island! The last time I went was like 10 years ago when I was 16, and I remember going to a hill in Fira and watching the sunset color the island and it was truly spectacular. This time I picked Oia because I want to stay away from all the commercialism and loudness.

Brotherlee what do you think of the Old Oia Houses and Lampetia?

Which one is better? I am not sure what the prices are for the Old Oia Houses but Lampetia's prices weren't too much for us.

Its so hard to tell from the photos, they make them all look great.

Also, I am not sure if youre familiar with other nearby islands, but we're trying to pick one more island to spend another 4 nights in- that is not too far and easily accessible by ferry. Our goal for the second island is to get rooms near a beautiful beach. So far we're leaning towards Naxos. We wanted Milos but it doesnt have daily trips to santorini.

Thanks!

When I lived in Santorini in 1985 I actually lived right next to the Lampetia Villas when it was a private residence and spent some quality time inside. I don't know what it's like now that it's been cut up into separate rooms, but judging from the photos I can find it looks fine to me. I've never seen the Old Oia Houses up close and personal, but the photos look very nice, and I am acquainted with the owners' reputation as good businesspeople, so I suspect the rooms are as good as their restaurant, which is one of the oldest in the village. Sorry I can't offer anything more specific.

The nearest island is the Greek Party Island, Ios, about an hour away by ferry. Then comes Naxos, then Paros, all on the same ferry route, all with excellent beaches. Depending on your desire for nightlife, which for me isn't a priority, any of these are good choices. I'll be spending a few days on Paros next May-June myself.

Do the Lampetia Villas have a sunset view? nice view? Their pool doesnt seem as nice as the Ether Studios pool. I think we're leaning towards the Ether Studios right now. The only bad thing about them is that theyre not in the center of oia but from what I understand its only a very short walk right? I think that would work. They have a good sunset view and nice pool.

Do you think 3 nights is enough for santorini or should we book one more night?

We're not really into party scenes at all and that is exactly what were avoiding. We're looking for a really special beach ( not shallow either, we like to swim) and rooms nearby. The rooms dont have to be anything special just close to beach. We found these rooms called Astra Naxos near Prokopios beach- any tips? Is Agia Anna better?

My friend suggested Paros, is it nice? Does it have nicer beaches than Naxos?
